A burn refers to the damage caused to the skin, and sometimes deeper structures, by heat (flame, scald, contact, electricity), chemical agents or radiation. Methods of first-aid treatment of burns are varied, imprecise and sometimes harmful. ⋯ The medical profession must be aware of what can be achieved and the necessary steps in the initial treatment of the burn. The profession is called upon to offer first-aid, to give advice and to lecture on accidents in our community, so it is necessary to have a clear plan of treatment.

Epilepsy is a common disorder affecting approximately one in every two hundred people, from all walks of life, and presenting in addition to the seizure disorder itself, varying social, psychological and economic problems. A simple classification of epilepsy is described, and the concept of 'seizure threshold' introduced. ⋯ Accurate diagnosis of seizure type ensures that optimal therapy can be offered. The various drugs used to control epilepsy are discussed, and comments on the general management of the patient are offered.

All babies cry, but the mother unable to satisfy her infant's distress may experience doubts as to her own mothering ability. Yet 'colic' is often used to explain away many problems of the infant. But to accept such a diagnosis denies mother and infant help at this difficult time.
