Voluntary shifts of visuospatial attention are associated with a lateralization of parieto-occipital alpha power (7-13Hz), i.e. higher power in the hemisphere ipsilateral and lower power contralateral to the locus of attention. Recent noninvasive neuromodulation studies demonstrated that alpha power can be experimentally increased using transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). ⋯ The study demonstrates that high-density tACS at 10Hz can be used to modulate visuospatial attention performance. The tACS effect is task-specific, indicating that not all forms of attention are equally susceptible to the stimulation.

Measures to ensure research integrity have been widely discussed due to the social, economic and scientific impact of research integrity. In the past few years, financial support for health research in emerging countries has steadily increased, resulting in a growing number of scientific publications. These achievements, however, have been accompanied by a rise in retracted publications followed by concerns about the quality and reliability of such publications. ⋯ Publications are not retracted solely for research misconduct but also for honest error. Nevertheless, considering authors affiliated with Brazilian institutions, this review concluded that most of the retracted health and life sciences publications were retracted due to research misconduct. Because the number of publications is the most valued indicator of scientific productivity for funding and career progression purposes, a systematic effort from the national research councils, funding agencies, universities and scientific journals is needed to avoid an escalating trend of research misconduct. More investigations are needed to comprehend the underlying factors of research misconduct and its increasing manifestation.

Murderers or thieves at risk? Offence-related suicide rates in adolescent and adult prison populations.
Prisoners have a higher risk of suicide compared to non-incarcerated individuals. One aim of suicide prevention for prisoners is to identify risk factors in order to put stronger support mechanisms in place for the more vulnerable detainees. This study investigates the suicide risk (SR) in offence-related sub-populations in a representative German sample and differentiates between SR for adolescent and adult prisoners. ⋯ The index offence of detainees is associated with SR and age-related differences exist. Suicide prevention in prisons should take both into account to determine populations at risk.

Genetic polymorphisms in PXR and NF-κB1 influence susceptibility to anti-tuberculosis drug-induced liver injury.
Pregnane X receptor (PXR) regulates the expression of drug-metabolizing enzymes and transport enzymes. NF-κB not only plays a role in liver homeostasis and injury-healing processes by regulating inflammatory responses but may also regulate the transcription of PXR. Currently, genetic polymorphisms in PXR are associated with adverse drug effects. Because little is known about the association between NF-κB1 genetic polymorphisms and adverse drug reactions, we explored the association between PXR and NF-κB1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and susceptibility to anti-tuberculosis drug-induced liver injury (ATDILI). ⋯ Our study is the first to reveal that rs3814055 variants in PXR and rs78872571 and rs4647992 variants in NF-κB1 are associated with susceptibility to ATDILI caused by first-line anti-tuberculosis combination treatment in the Han Chinese population.

The setting of the rising sun? A recent comparative history of life expectancy trends in Japan and Australia.
Adult male and female mortality declines in Japan have been slower than in most high-income countries since the early 1990s. This study compares Japan's recent life expectancy trends with the more favourable trends in Australia, measures the contribution of age groups and causes of death to differences in these trends, and places the findings in the context of the countries' risk factor transitions. ⋯ The considerable gains in Australian male life expectancy from declining non-communicable disease mortality are attributable to a range of risk factors, including declining smoking prevalence due to strong public health interventions. A recent reversal in life expectancy trends could continue because Japan has greater scope for further falls in smoking and far lower levels of obesity. Japan's substantial female life expectancy advantage however could diminish in future because it is primarily due to lower mortality at old ages.
