Case ReportsAn alternative management for growth retarded fetus with absent end-diastolic velocity in umbilical artery and normal cardiotocography.
Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) is associated with fetal adverse conditions. The most important cause of growth restriction and poor perinatal outcome is chronic fetal hypoxemia (CFH). Adaptation to CFH can be studied by Doppler velocity waveform on umbilical and fetal arteries and cardiotocography (CTG). ⋯ In the case of fetal monitoring controversy assessment of umbilical blood analysis may be crucial. This examination is significant and independent of the interval between cordocentesis and the onset of CTG pathology. This interval may be utilized for intrauterine treatment and for optimizing obstetric management.

Cerebral function monitoring in neonates with perinatal asphyxia--preliminary results.
This study was based on foreign studies which confirmed the importance of amplitude-integrated electroencefalographic monitoring (aEEG) in the early prediction of the future neurological development of newborn infants with hypoxic syndrome. Our aim was to confirm the correlation between the type of aEEG trace and the level of brain damage in newborn infants in the early hours after the hypoxic event and to introduce this method into routine practice. ⋯ Cerebral function monitoring is a non-invasive method used for the early assessment of the severity of a hypoxic event. As it could be used in the first few hours after birth, this method could be applied to select patients suitable for therapeutic hypothermia.

Effect of selenium compound (selol) on the opioid activity in vincristine induced hyperalgesia.
Effect of organoselenium compound (selol), on antinociceptive action of opioid agonists in vincristine neuropathic pain model was investigated. ⋯ Therefore, concomitant administration of selenium and opioids may be beneficial in terminal neoplastic states.

Comparative StudyEffect of intrauterine infection and perinatal risk factors on serum concentrations of insulin like growth factor (IGF-I) in full-term and preterm newborns.
IGF-I is believed to be a key factor in fetal growth dynamics It is widely known, that serious early-onset infection in the newborn is a risk factor for further developmental disturbances in a child. However, effect of congenital infection as well as an influence of infectious and non-infectious perinatal risk factors on circulating IGF-I concentrations in newborns has not been examined, yet. ⋯ We conclude that intrauterine infection increases serum IGF-I concentration in full-term infants, but not in preterm infants, that may be a result of immaturity. We suggest serum IGF-I concentration may be considered an additional element of developmental and nutritional state assessment in infected newborn.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyProspective randomised comparative study of the effect of buprenorphine, methadone and heroin on the course of pregnancy, birthweight of newborns, early postpartum adaptation and course of the neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) in women followed up in the outpatient department.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of substitution therapy in heroin addicted pregnant women on the course of pregnancy, perinatal outcomes and course of the neonatal abstinence syndrome. ⋯ Comparison of the groups of outpatients is in many ways questionable because of the restricted possibility of the patients' control. The lifestyle of addicted women has the same impact as the drug use alone. This is probably the main reason for differences in some of the monitored parameters between individual groups. Based on our results we can state that substitution therapy provides pregnant women with the possibility of social stabilization and adequate prenatal care. substitution therapy decreases the street heroin consumption. Methadone notably protracts the newborn's abstinence syndrome. With regard to this fact, attention has been recently focused on substitution with buprenorphine that seems to be from this viewpoint a more considerate option.
