Comparative StudyThe quality of highly regarded adolescent substance abuse treatment programs: results of an in-depth national survey.
Drug and alcohol abuse and dependence are the most prevalent causes of adolescent morbidity and mortality in the United States. Effective, accessible treatment for adolescents with substance abuse problems is urgently needed. ⋯ Most of the highly regarded programs we surveyed are not adequately addressing the key elements of effective adolescent substance abuse treatment. Expanded use of standardized assessment instruments, improved ability to engage and retain youths, greater attention to gender and cultural competence, and greater investment in scientific evaluation of treatment outcomes are among the most critical needs. Expanding awareness of effective elements in treating adolescents will lead the way to program improvement.

Headache, stomachache, backache, and morning fatigue among adolescent girls in the United States: associations with behavioral, sociodemographic, and environmental factors.
Data on the prevalence and co-occurrence of multiple somatic symptoms among US adolescent females as they are influenced by sociodemographic, behavioral, and environmental factors is limited. ⋯ Somatic complaints of headache, stomachache, backache, and morning fatigue are common among US adolescent girls and co-occur often. Effective clinical treatment of this population requires comprehensive assessment of all female adolescents presenting with seemingly isolated somatic complaints.

Parent identification of early emerging child behavior problems: predictors of sharing parental concern with health providers.
To better understand the predictors of parental discussions with pediatric care providers (pediatricians, psychologists/psychiatrists, social workers, early intervention providers, or other medical specialists) regarding early child behavior problems and to suggest strategies for eliciting early identification from parents in health care settings. ⋯ Parental worry is a robust predictor of help seeking among parents of children with behavioral problems. Further, lags in social competence contribute to both parental worry and help seeking. These findings, in conjunction with previous evidence that child behavior problems amenable to early intervention are often unidentified, suggest that systematic inquiry by health care providers about parental concerns is important in the identification of early emerging behavioral health problems.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialEvaluation of a method to reduce over-the-counter medication dosing error.
To introduce a simple method of dosing over-the-counter medication in a home setting using a color-coding concept and to compare dosing deviation from recommended dosage using the color-coded method with dosing deviation using conventional package labeling. ⋯ This study suggests a marked improvement in caregivers' ability to correctly determine and measure an over-the-counter medication for their child using a color-coded method compared with conventional methods.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialGlycemic patterns detected by continuous subcutaneous glucose sensing in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus treated by multiple daily injections vs continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion.
To compare glycemic patterns by mode of therapy in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus using the Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGMS). ⋯ Intensive treatment with CSII seemed to be associated with slightly better prebreakfast, postprandial, and within-target glucose profiles than MDI, as well as a smaller area under the curve for hypoglycemia. Lower hypoglycemia-related variables in the second sensor reading in each arm indicate that the CGMS may serve as an educational tool to decrease the rate and magnitude of hypoglycemia.
