Severe injury mechanisms in two paediatric trauma centres: Determination of prevention priorities.
To meet community needs, injury prevention programs for children should be targeted to trends in objective data on mechanisms of injury. The aim of the present study was to identify the most important severe injury mechanisms. ⋯ The present study shows that the severe injury prevention priorities identified vary depending on the severity measures used. The variations seen across age groups and between the two centres are also important factors that must be taken into account when developing prevention programs or considering research initiatives.

Performance of clinical clerks doing paediatric rotations in a community hospital versus a university hospital.
Most clinical clerks (third-year medical students) do their paediatric rotation at the IWK Health Centre, the Dalhousie University-affiliated tertiary care paediatric institution in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Due to limited space, some clerks are sent to community hospitals in the provinces of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. These community hospitals are different in terms of the academic environment and the availability of paediatric subspecialty services. ⋯ Clerks doing paediatric rotations in community hospitals perform as well and receive similar educational benefits as those at university hospitals. Community hospitals can provide a quality experience for paediatric clerkship training.

Seasonal timing of the Royal College examination in general paediatrics: A survey of residents' preferences.
Currently, the general paediatrics examination administered by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada is offered annually in the spring. Controversy exists regarding its seasonal timing. Assessing the views of residents anticipating the examination is relevant to examination administrators. ⋯ Residents' preferences for the timing of the examination are varied, with 'spring of 4th year' being most preferred. Residents demonstrated stronger support for 'fall of 4th year' with increasing years of training, and if planning to pursue subspecialty training after three years of general paediatrics.

Needle and dread: Is it just a little poke? A call for implementation of evidence-based policies for the management of needle pain in clinical settings.
The present commentary calls for the implementation of evidence-based policies to manage paediatric needle pain in clinical settings. While there have been fundamental advances in the treatment of needle pain over the past three decades, relevant techniques are often not used in clinical practice. Evidence indicates that needle procedures do hurt, are frequently cited as the most painful experience by children and a subset of children are terrified of them. ⋯ An essential step in translating research knowledge into practice is the creation of evidence-based policies. Policy statements regarding the management of needle pain must be incorporated at the hospital, clinic and individual office levels to reduce the amount of pain and distress children suffer from needle procedures. Specific suggestions for policies to be incorporated in clinical settings are provided.
