Health research involving First Nations, Inuit and Métis children and their communities.
Canadian and international guidelines address the ethical conduct of health research in general and the issues affecting Indigenous populations in particular. This statement summarizes, for clinicians and researchers, relevant ethical and practical considerations for health research involving Aboriginal children and youth. ⋯ Expanding our knowledge of ways to address the health disparities facing Canada's Aboriginal children and youth can inform health policy and the provision of services. Community-based participatory research is proposed as a means to achieve this goal.

The medical assessment of bruising in suspected child maltreatment cases: A clinical perspective.
Bruises commonly occur in children and are most often the result of a minor accidental injury. However, bruises can also signal an underlying medical illness or an inflicted injury (maltreatment). Although bruising is the most common manifestation of child physical maltreatment, knowing when to be concerned about maltreatment and how to assess bruises in this context can be challenging for clinicians. Based on current literature and published recommendations, this practice point will help clinicians to distinguish between accidental and inflicted bruises, to evaluate and manage bruising in the context of suspected child maltreatment, and to evaluate for an underlying medical predisposition to bruising.

Are wait times and length of stay in Alberta emergency departments for children's mental health meeting national benchmarks? Trends from 2002 to 2008.
To describe wait times, treatment times and length of stay (LOS) for pediatric mental health visits to emergency departments (EDs). ⋯ Most median ED wait times for pediatric mental health visits exceeded national recommendations, while the median LOS for all visits met recommendations. Lower-acuity visits had wait times that exceeded treatment times. Future research should explore whether longer wait times are associated with adverse outcomes, and whether current wait/treatment times are warranted to ensure that ED throughput is optimized.

A survey of the management of newborns with severe hemophilia in Canada.
To determine the practice patterns of Canadian hematologists and neonatologists/paediatricians who care for newborns with hemophilia, with regard to vitamin K administration, use of empirical clotting factor replacement therapy, neuroimaging and timing of hematology consultation. ⋯ The observed lack of consensus regarding important management decisions indicates a need for ongoing research in the care of newborns with hemophilia. Systematic differences between hematologists and neonatologists/paediatricians suggest a role for improved communication and collaboration between these two groups of practitioners.
