Extubation Failure Is Associated With Increased Mortality Following First Stage Single Ventricle Reconstruction Operation.
To identify the prevalence, causes, risk factors, and outcomes associated with extubation failure following first stage single ventricle reconstruction surgery. ⋯ There is a high prevalence of extubation failure following first stage single ventricle reconstruction, and this is associated with considerably worse patient outcomes. The high prevalence and also the wide variation in rates of extubation failure in reported literature provide with an opportunity for implementation of quality assurance activities to minimize this complication and improve outcomes.

Sepsis in Children: Global Implications of the World Health Assembly Resolution on Sepsis.
Sepsis, worldwide the leading cause of death in children, has now been recognized as the global health emergency it is. On May 26, 2017, the World Health Assembly, the decision-making body of the World Health Organization, adopted a resolution proposed by the Global Sepsis Alliance to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and management of sepsis. ⋯ The resolution highlights sepsis as a global threat and urges the 194 United Nations member states to take specific actions and implement appropriate measures to reduce its human and health economic burden. Body Composition Changes in Severely Burned Children During ICU Hospitalization.
Prolonged hospitalization due to burn injury results in physical inactivity and muscle weakness. However, how these changes are distributed among body parts is unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of body composition changes in different anatomical regions during ICU hospitalization. ⋯ ICU hospitalization is associated with greater lean mass loss in the upper limbs of burned children. Mobilization programs should include early mobilization of upper limbs to restore upper extremity function.

Temporal Changes in Prescription of Neuropharmacologic Drugs and Utilization of Resources Related to Neurologic Morbidity in Mechanically Ventilated Children With Bronchiolitis.
Critically ill children with bronchiolitis may require neuropharmacologic medications and support for neuro-functional sequelae, but current practices are not well described. We aimed to describe recent trends in neuropharmacology and utilization of neuro-rehabilitation resources in mechanically ventilated children with bronchiolitis. ⋯ Prescription of neuropharmacologic agents increased over time using metrics of both overall drug burden and specific drug usage. Concurrently, the utilization of services that evaluate and/or treat neurologic morbidity was common and also increased over time.
