Plasma and Platelet Transfusion Strategies in Critically Ill Children Following Severe Trauma, Traumatic Brain Injury, and/or Intracranial Hemorrhage: From the Transfusion and Anemia EXpertise Initiative-Control/Avoidance of Bleeding.
To present consensus statements and supporting literature for plasma and platelet transfusions in critically ill children with severe trauma, traumatic brain injury, and/or intracranial hemorrhage from the Transfusion and Anemia EXpertise Initiative-Control/Avoidance of Bleeding. ⋯ The lack of evidence precludes proposing recommendations on monitoring of the coagulation system and on plasma and platelets transfusion in critically ill pediatric patients with severe trauma, severe traumatic brain injury, or nontraumatic intracranial hemorrhage.

Multicenter StudySuicide and Self-Harm in Children and Adolescents Admitted to PICUs in the United States.
To characterize the epidemiology of children and adolescents admitted for deliberate self-harm to PICUs in the United States by examining patient demographics, diagnoses, modes of self-harm, and outcomes. ⋯ PICU admissions due to self-harm increased for all age groups during the study period. Females accounted for most of these admissions, whereas males accrued most of the in-hospital deaths. Intentional drug ingestion was the most common mode of self-harm and was rarely fatal, whereas asphyxia and firearms were the mechanisms associated with the highest mortality.

Multicenter StudyA New Risk Assessment Model for Hospital-Acquired Venous Thromboembolism in Critically Ill Children: A Report From the Children's Hospital-Acquired Thrombosis Consortium.
To create a risk model for hospital-acquired venous thromboembolism in critically ill children upon admission to an ICU. ⋯ Using the multicenter Children's Hospital-Acquired Thrombosis registry, we identified five independent risk factors for hospital-acquired venous thromboembolism in critically ill children, deriving a new hospital-acquired venous thromboembolism risk assessment model. A prospective validation study is underway to define a high-risk group for risk-stratified interventional trials investigating the efficacy and safety of prophylactic anticoagulation in critically ill children.

Plasma and Platelet Transfusion Strategies in Critically Ill Children With Malignancy, Acute Liver Failure and/or Liver Transplantation, or Sepsis: From the Transfusion and Anemia EXpertise Initiative-Control/Avoidance of Bleeding.
To present the consensus statements with supporting literature for plasma and platelet transfusions in critically ill neonates and children with malignancy, acute liver disease and/or following liver transplantation, and sepsis and/or disseminated intravascular coagulation from the Transfusion and Anemia EXpertise Initiative-Control/Avoidance of Bleeding. ⋯ In the Transfusion and Anemia EXpertise Initiative-Control/Avoidance of Bleeding program, the current absence of evidence for use of plasma and/or platelet transfusion in critically ill children with malignancy, acute liver disease and/or following liver transplantation, and sepsis means that only expert consensus statements are possible for these areas of practice.

Research Priorities for Plasma and Platelet Transfusion Strategies in Critically Ill Children: From the Transfusion and Anemia EXpertise Initiative-Control/Avoidance of Bleeding.
To present a list of high-priority research initiatives for the study of plasma and platelet transfusions in critically ill children from the Transfusion and Anemia EXpertise Initiative-Control/Avoidance of Bleeding. ⋯ Studies are needed to focus on the efficacy/harm, dosing, timing, and outcomes of critically ill children who receive plasma and/or platelet transfusions. The completion of these studies will facilitate the development of evidence-based recommendations.
