Timing, Duration, and Severity of Hyponatremia Following Pediatric Brain Tumor Surgery.
To describe the time course, variability, and magnitude of serum sodium changes among children undergoing intracranial tumor surgery. ⋯ Hyponatremia developed in just over half of children. Young children with hydrocephalus have increased risk of severe hyponatremia. Those with severe hyponatremia need frequent and prolonged monitoring because of risk for repeat sodium changes. Further study is needed to evaluate ideal monitoring and treatment of severe hyponatremia after intracranial tumor surgery.

Pressure and Flow Waveform Characteristics of Eight High-Frequency Oscillators.
The differences in performance of early generation high-frequency oscillators have been attributed to their distinct pressure and flow waveforms. Recently, five new oscillators have been commercially released. The objective of this study was to characterize the pressure and flow waveforms of eight commercially available oscillators. ⋯ Current high-frequency oscillators deliver different waveforms. As these may result in variable clinical performance, operators should be aware that these differences exist.

Comparative StudyValidation of Extravascular Lung Water Measurement by Transpulmonary Thermodilution in a Pediatric Animal Model.
The measurement of extravascular lung water using the transpulmonary thermodilution technique enables the bedside quantification of the amount of pulmonary edema. Children have higher indexed to body weight values of extravascular lung water compared with adults. Transpulmonary thermodilution measurements of extravascular lung water in children have not yet been validated. The purpose of this study was to validate the extravascular lung water measurements with the transpulmonary thermodilution method over a wide range of lung water values in a pediatric animal model. ⋯ EVLWITPTD was significantly correlated to the postmortem gravimetric gold standard, although a significant overestimation was demonstrated with increasing pulmonary edema.

Therapeutic Role of Anakinra, an Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist, in the Management of Secondary Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis/Sepsis/Multiple Organ Dysfunction/Macrophage Activating Syndrome in Critically Ill Children.
Secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, macrophage activating syndrome, and sepsis share the same inflammatory phenotype leading often to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome needing intensive care. The goal of this article is to describe our experience with anakinra (Kineret), a recombinant interleukin-1 receptor antagonist, in decreasing the systemic inflammation. ⋯ Anakinra could represent a promising therapeutic approach in these life-threatening disorders that are likely underdiagnosed and often difficult to treat.
