Multicenter StudyEpidemiology of sepsis in pediatric intensive care units: first Colombian multicenter study.
In 2002, the Surviving Sepsis Campaign pointed out the need to recognize sepsis as an important cause of death and high economic and social costs. There are few epidemiologic studies of this disease in pediatrics and none in Colombia. The objective of this study was to describe the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of patients with sepsis who were admitted at participating pediatric intensive care units. ⋯ Sepsis is common in Colombian pediatric intensive care units. Clear risk factors for getting sick and dying from this disease were identified. Mortality resulting from this disease is considerable for a developing society like ours.

An evidence-based threshold for thrombocytopenia associated with clinically significant bleeding in pediatric intensive care unit patients.
To determine the epidemiology and identify the risk factors for clinically significant bleeding in the pediatric intensive care unit. ⋯ Clinically significant bleeding is a more common complication for pediatric intensive care unit patients than has been previously reported. The evidence-based threshold for thrombocytopenia identified as a risk factor should be further investigated in a prospective study.

Development and validation of a neonatal intensive care parent satisfaction instrument.
To develop and test the psychometric properties of the EMPATHIC-N (EMpowerment of PArents in THe Intensive Care-Neonatology) questionnaire measuring parent satisfaction. ⋯ The EMPATHIC-N questionnaire is a valid quality performance indicator to measure the delivered care as perceived by parents.

Randomized Controlled TrialPlacement of peripherally inserted central catheters in children guided by ultrasound: a prospective randomized, and controlled trial.
To compare the use of vascular Doppler ultrasound with vein visualization and palpation for positioning peripherally inserted central catheters in children and to determine the influence of these methods on the success of the first puncture attempt, catheter positioning, and time required for the accomplishment. ⋯ The use of ultrasound increased the successful positioning of peripherally inserted central catheters in comparison with the venous anatomic landmark visualization and palpation technique and further optimized the time spent on the procedure.

Impact of resident duty hour limits on safety in the intensive care unit: a national survey of pediatric and neonatal intensivists.
Resident duty-hour regulations potentially shift the workload from resident to attending physicians. We sought to understand how current or future regulatory changes might impact safety in academic pediatric and neonatal intensive care units. ⋯ Pediatric intensivists do not perceive improved patient safety from current resident duty-hour restrictions. Policies to further restrict resident duty-hours should consider unintended consequences of worsening certain aspects of intensive care unit safety.
