Collaborative pediatric critical care research network: looking back and moving forward.
To update the pediatric critical care community on the progress of the Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Research Network and plans for the future. ⋯ The Network remains committed to its stated goal "to initiate a multicentered program designed to investigate the safety and efficacy of treatment and management strategies to care for critically ill children, as well as the pathophysiologic basis of critical illness and injury in childhood."

Defining acute lung disease in children with the oxygenation saturation index.
To evaluate whether a formula could be derived using oxygen saturation (Spo2) to replace Pao2 that would allow identification of children with acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome. Definitions of acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome require arterial blood gases to determine the Pao2/Fio2 ratio of 300 (acute lung injury) and 200 (acute respiratory distress syndrome). ⋯ Noninvasive methods of assessing oxygenation may be utilized with reasonable sensitivity and specificity to define acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome, and, with prospective validation, have the potential to increase the number of children enrolled into clinical trials.

A tertiary care center's experience with therapeutic hypothermia after pediatric cardiac arrest.
To describe the use and feasibility of therapeutic hypothermia after pediatric cardiac arrest. ⋯ This is the largest study reported on the use of therapeutic mild hypothermia in pediatric cardiac arrest to date. We found that therapeutic hypothermia was feasible, with target temperature achieved in <3 hrs overall. Temperature below target range was associated with increased mortality. Prospective study is urgently needed to determine the efficacy of therapeutic hypothermia in pediatric patients after cardiac arrest.

Case ReportsSuccessful use of extracorporeal life support in a hematopoietic stem cell transplant patient with diffuse alveolar hemorrhage.
To describe the successful use of extracorporeal life support in a hematopoietic stem cell transplant patient with diffuse alveolar hemorrhage. ⋯ Although the reported survival of hematopoietic stem cell transplant patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation remains low, each patient must be evaluated for potential benefit of extracorporeal life support.
