Validation of transpulmonary thermodilution cardiac output measurement in a pediatric animal model.
This study was undertaken to validate the transpulmonary thermodilution cardiac output measurement (CO(TPTD)) in a controlled newborn animal model under various hemodynamic conditions with special emphasis on low cardiac output. ⋯ The transpulmonary thermodilution technique is a reliable method of measuring cardiac output in newborn animals. It is also capable of tracking changes in cardiac output.

Surgery-related posttraumatic stress disorder in parents of children undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass surgery: a prospective cohort study.
We aimed at evaluating surgery-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in parents of children undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass surgery. Risk factors for parental PTSD symptoms were explored. ⋯ Parents of children undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass surgery are at increased risk for intermediate and long-term psychological malfunctioning. Acute symptoms of PTSD in parents shortly after discharge of their child are a major risk factor for the development of chronic PTSD. Clinicians need to identify parents at risk at an early stage to provide them with systematic support.

Prospective detection of hyperglycemia in critically ill children using continuous glucose monitoring.
To evaluate the extent of hyperglycemia in nondiabetic children admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit using an interstitial continuous glucose monitor, and to compare the ability of this interstitial continuous glucose monitoring system to detect hyperglycemia with that of intermittent laboratory monitoring. ⋯ Significant hyperglycemia is present in pediatric intensive care patients and may be underestimated by intermittent laboratory monitoring.
