Randomized Controlled Trial
A multilevel approach for promoting physical activity in rural communities: a cluster randomized controlled trial.
Physical activity (PA) has demonstrated a decreased risk in various cancers and other chronic diseases; however, rural residents are less likely to attain recommended levels of PA compared to urban and suburban counterparts. Given rural residents make up 15% of the United States population, there is a need for novel approaches to increase PA among this population. The goal of the present study is to investigate the effectiveness of a multilevel intervention to increase PA rates among rural residents. ⋯ This study is among the first of its kind to test a multilevel intervention in a rural setting, address life priorities that compliment health outcomes, and examine moderation between behavioral interventions and the natural environments where people are physically active. Our results will influence the field by enhancing the ability to scale-up innovative, PA interventions with the potential to reach high-risk, rural populations.

Painful Diabetic Neuropathy (PDN) is a complication that affects up to one third of people living with diabetes. There is limited data on the prevalence of PDN from countries in the Middle East and North Africa. The aim of this study was to estimate the point prevalence of PDN in adults in Eastern Libya using the self-report Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs (S-LANSS) pain scale. ⋯ The prevalence of PDN in people with diabetes in Eastern Libya was 42.2%. Risk factors for developing PDN were high fasting plasma glucose concentration, long duration of diabetes, and higher level of educational and employment status.

On April 28, 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared polio a "Public Health Emergency of International Concern" (PHIC) under the authority of the International Health Regulations. Although polio has been eradicated from nearly every nation on earth, Pakistan is one of three countries where wild polio and vaccine-derived polio strains remain, thwarting global eradication efforts. ⋯ Based on our analysis of existing barriers and challenges associated with polio eradication in Pakistan, this study discusses why employing "vaccine diplomacy" represents a key policy and advocacy strategic approach to achieve the overall end game of polio eradication. Specifically, we identify a set of concrete public health, international development, and diplomatic and policy recommendations that can act synergistically under the umbrella of health and vaccine diplomacy to finally put an end to polio.

Stress is a common psychological condition usually associated with many psycho-physical disorders. Stress and its risk factors are frequently seen in Ethiopians including university students. In such circumstances, a valid measure to screen for stress in Ethiopians is necessary. Therefore, we assessed the psychometric properties of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) in Ethiopian university students. ⋯ The psychometric measures support the validity of the PSS-10 in Ethiopian university students.

Individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) experience a range of cognitive, affective, and physical deficits following prenatal alcohol exposure. They are thought to be overrepresented in criminal justice settings. However, limited evidence is available to inform prevalence. We sought to estimate the prevalence of FASD in a Northern Canadian correctional population. ⋯ Findings showed disproportionately high estimated FASD prevalence in this representative sample compared to general population estimates in both Canada and the U.S. (2-5%), underscoring the need for improved FASD screening and diagnosis in correctional settings, and education for clinicians working in the justice context. Strengthened health prevention and intervention efforts to support the needs of individuals with FASD outside the criminal justice context are needed.
