Short-term versus long-term effects of depressive symptoms on mortality in patients on dialysis.
Depressive symptoms seem to pose a risk factor for mortality among patients on dialysis. It is currently unknown whether the association is only short-lived and whether associations over time depend on specific causes of mortality. ⋯ Depressive symptoms at the start of dialysis therapy are associated with short-, medium-, and long-term mortality. The cause-specific mortality risk over time may help clinicians to understand multifactorial causes of the association between depressive symptoms and survival.

The bidirectional association between depression and insomnia: the HUNT study.
Depression and insomnia are closely linked, yet our understanding of their prospective relationships remains limited. The aim of the current study was to investigate the directionality of association between depression and insomnia. ⋯ The results support a bidirectional relationship between insomnia and depression. This finding stands in contrast to the previous studies, which have mainly focused on insomnia as a risk factor for the onset of depression.

Randomized Controlled TrialPredictors of cancer-related pain improvement over time.
To determine the predictors of pain improvement among patients being treated for cancer-related pain over 12 months. ⋯ Effective management of depression and comorbid conditions along with improvement of social services could be critical components of a comprehensive pain management. Patients with more severe pain or with recurrent or progressive cancers may require closer monitoring and adequate treatment of pain. Trial Registration clinicaltrials.gov Identifier: NCT00313573.

Randomized Controlled TrialThe effect of duloxetine treatment on cognition in patients with fibromyalgia.
To determine the effect of duloxetine treatment on cognition in patients with fibromyalgia. ⋯ Although scores differed somewhat from norms for age, substantial cognitive impairment was not evident in patients with fibromyalgia as assessed by the Symbol Digit Substitution Test, Trail-Making Test, and Verbal Learning and Recall Test. Overall, duloxetine treatment had neither positive nor negative effects on cognition.

Neuroticism and cardiovascular disease mortality: socioeconomic status modifies the risk in women (UK Health and Lifestyle Survey).
The association between personality traits and mortality might differ as a function of socioeconomic status (SES). Our aim was to evaluate the all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer mortality risk associated with neuroticism or extraversion and their interactions with SES in a representative sample of the UK adult population. ⋯ High neuroticism is a risk factor for cardiovascular mortality in women with low SES, whereas in women with higher SES, it is protective. Further research is needed to replicate this finding and identify the mechanisms behind the modifying effect of SES on neuroticism.
