Frequency and clinical characteristics of chronic daily headache in an outpatient clinic setting.
Chronic daily headache (CDH) is not a diagnosis but a category that includes many disorders representing primary and secondary headaches. According to the International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd edition (ICHD-II), CDH is defined as headache which occurs more often than 15 days per month for at least 3 months. ⋯ The most frequent cause of CDH in our cohort was chronic migraine. Women suffered more frequently than men. Antidepressants were the most effective preventive medications for all types of CDH, which may suggest that serotoninergic mechanisms can be an important factor in the pathophysiology of chronic pain syndromes.

Review[Influence of transcranial direct current stimulation on cognitive functioning of patients with brain injury].
Clinical consequences of brain injuries are not simply the result of the initial insult, but also reflect dynamic changes of activity in disrupted neural networks, some of which might be maladaptive. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), which delivers weak polarizing direct currents to the cortex, is used to modulate cortical excitability. The nature of neuromodulation depends on the stimulation polarity: anodal stimulation increases cortical excitability while cathodal stimulation reduces it. ⋯ In most paradigms tested, excitability-enhancing anodal tDCS proved beneficial to learning and memory processes, attention, and linguistic skills. In this context, tDCS appears to be a promising method to improve cognitive functions in patients with various neurological disorders, including stroke and neurodegenerative diseases. Exposure to brain polarization may help in specific and selective enhancement of adaptive patterns of activity, suppression of non-adaptive activation patterns, and balancing interhemispheric interactions.

Neuron-specific enolase and S 100B protein as predictors of outcome in ischaemic stroke.
As neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and S 100B protein are brain origin proteins, the aim of this study was to assess whether a single NSE and S 100B measure may predict clinical outcome of patients with cerebral ischaemic infarct. ⋯ Although significant differences in NSE and S 100B levels between stroke patients and the control group were found, only S 100B protein level correlated with stroke volume, neurological status at admission and functional outcome. NSE did not correlate with stroke volume, neurological status or clinical outcome.

Medial sphenoid ridge meningiomas: early and long-term results of surgical removal using the fronto-temporo-orbito-zygomatic approach.
The fronto-temporo-orbito-zygomatic approach (FTOZA) is an alternative to the pte-rional approach in surgical resection of meningiomas of the medial part of the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone. The purpose of this study is to present our results of treatment of these meningiomas using the FTOZA. ⋯ The FTOZA is a useful technique for removal of tumours expanding superiorly to the middle cranial fossa base without significant compression of the brain. Ability to remove tumours through the described approach decreases as the degree of infiltration of the clivus increases.
