Hemispheric ischaemic stroke complicated by oedema is associated with high mortality. The results of randomized studies showed that decompressive hemicraniectomy performed in this group of patients could be beneficial. First experiences with implementation of hemi-craniectomy in patients with brain infarct in our stroke centre are presented. ⋯ Decompressive surgery with duraplasty can be a life-saving procedure for patients with brain oedema. To our knowledge, the presented cases are among the first reported cases of hemispheric ischaemic stroke treated with decompressive hemicraniectomy in Poland. Extended follow-up with a larger group of patients is necessary to assess long-term outcome.

Bilateral subthalamic nucleus stimulation in the treatment of advanced Parkinson's disease. Five years' personal experience.
The objective of the study was to assess bilateral subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) for patients with advanced Parkinson disease (PD). ⋯ Bilateral STN DBS is an effective and safe treatment for patients with advanced PD. Bilateral STN DBS contributes to improvement of parkinsonian symptoms in the off state and levodopa-induced dyskinesia. This can be correlated with a 50% reduction of daily levodopa dose 5 years postoperatively.

Review[Transcranial magnetic stimulation in the therapy of selected post-stroke cognitive deficits: aphasia and visuospatial hemineglect].
Over the last several years functional neuroimaging studies and neurophysiological investigations have provided greater insight into the mechanisms underlying neuroplasticity and recovery after stroke. Various techniques became available for the non-invasive modulation of human brain activity and allowed better rehabilitation programmes to be designed. One of these new techniques is transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). ⋯ A growing number of studies consider rTMS as a potential therapeutic technique in neurological disorders. This method can be used as a complementary treatment to conventional therapy based on training of disturbed functions. In this review, we cite studies indicating that sessions of rTMS could improve some of the cognitive symptoms after stroke.

Comparative StudyColloid cysts of the third ventricle. Endoscopic and open microsurgical management.
The endoscopic approach to colloid cysts of the third ventricle is receiving increasing interest. However, its effectiveness is a matter of discussion. The aim of the study was to present direct and long-term outcome after endoscopy of colloid cyst vs microsurgery. ⋯ The endoscopic approach to colloid cysts of the third ventricle is safe, effective and carries a low complication rate. Endoscopy may be recommended as a treatment option.
