[Intraoperative assessment of cognitive and executive functions in patients with brain tumors].
The aim of this paper was to evaluate the usefulness of selected methods of intraoperative neuropsychological assessment. In order to investigate the influence of the direct cortical stimulation and tumor resection on the patients' intraoperative performance, we examined selected areas of cerebral cortex involved in cognitive activity in patients undergoing awake craniotomy for brain tumors. ⋯ We showed that the presented methods of intraoperative assessment of cognitive activity were useful and appropriate for the identification of the eloquent areas of the brain.

[Diagnosis of middle cerebral artery spasm by determination of flow velocity and the Lindegaard index with transcranial color Doppler sonography].
Recent reports have demonstrated the high utility of transcranial color-coded duplex sonography (TCCS) in the diagnosis of advanced spasm of the middle cerebral artery, whereas its accuracy in the diagnosis of mild vasospasm is reported to be lower. Relation of blood flow velocity in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) to that in the extracranial internal carotid artery (VMCA/VICA index) is recommended as being helpful in the diagnosis of vasospasm (the so called Lindegaard Index). Nevertheless, the exact diagnostic value of this index using the TCCS method remains to be established. The purpose of this study is to estimate the accuracy of TCCS in the diagnosis of MCA vasospasm, as based on the VMCA/VICA index. ⋯ The use of VMCA/VICA index improves the accuracy of TCCS in the diagnosis of mild vasospasm of the middle cerebral artery.

The association between migraine and functional gastrointestinal disorders has been confirmed by many clinical observations and epidemiological studies. In most patients during the attacks of migraine, apart from various neurological and vascular symptoms, gastrointestinal disturbances occur including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or diarrhea. Functional gastrointestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), are reported in migraine patients in periods between the attacks as well. ⋯ Nowadays, agonists and antagonists of serotoninergic receptors are the most efficacious drugs for IBS and migraine therapy. Some side effects of triptans, 5-HT(1B/D) agonists, used in migraine treatment may be connected with the influence of triptans on the gastrointestinal functions. A better understanding of the relationship between migraine and IBS may result in more effective treatment of both diseases.

Migraine is a common neurologic disorder whose etiology remains unknown. Migraine has been reported as a possible risk factor for ischemic stroke, especially in young women. The relationship between migraine and stroke is stronger in patients suffering from migraine with aura compared to those with common migraine. Coexistence of migraine and patent foramen ovale (PFO) should be also considered. The aim of our study was to evaluate the frequency of PFO in patients with migraine with aura (MA) and compare it with the prevalence of PFO in migraine patients without aura (M) and in a healthy age-matched control group. ⋯ Our findings suggest that at least some attacks of migraine with aura may be associated with paradoxical embolism.

[Auditory cognitive event-related potentials in migraine with and without aura in children and adolescents].
Cognitive Event-Related Potentials (CERP) reflect sensory information processing: cognitive function and early memory. Studies of CERP in adult migraneurs yielded contradictory results. The aim of our study was to evaluate CERP in children and adolescents with migraine with and without aura during the interictal period. ⋯ The CERP parameter changes in children with migraine point out the disturbances of cognitive functions also for auditory modalities. It suggests generalized dysfunction of cortical information processing in the interictal period of migraine.
