The neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin (NGAL) has been identified as the most promising biomarker of acute kidney injury (AKI). This study was aimed to evaluate a NGAL immunoassay on Beckman Coulter AU 5822. ⋯ This analytical evaluation attests that the NGAL Test™ has several technical and analytical advantages, including no manual pretreatment, low volume of sample (i.e., 3 μL), fast turnaround time (approx. 10 min), low imprecision, wide dynamic range, optimal linearity.

Early detection of patients with chronic kidney disease is of great importance. This study developed reference limits for serum creatinine and serum cystatin C concentrations and for the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in healthy subjects from the general population aged 25-65 years. ⋯ This study presents age- and sex-specific reference limits for five measures of renal function based on quantile regression models.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in breath of lung cancer patients and released by lung cancer cells were determined. As a reference sample breath collected from healthy volunteers and lung segments of cells with proper morphology were used. ⋯ Detection of lung cancer is possible by volatile biomarkers analysis in breath.

The clinical relevance of serum lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A(2) (Lp-PLA(2)) in populations prone to cardiometabolic risk needs exploration. We determined major covariates of Lp-PLA(2) mass, and its associations with cardiometabolic disorders. ⋯ Serum total Lp-PLA(2) mass may indicate either elevated or diminished cardiometabolic risk, specific for gender, depending on its partitioning in lipoprotein groups.
