Case Reports[Liver failure due to mushroom poisoning: clinical course and new treatment perspectives].
Mushroom poisoning, mainly due to the Amanita genus, is an infrequent cause of liver failure in our environment. However, because of its high morbidity and mortality, it constitutes a medical emergency. The characteristic initial symptoms of vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea are nonspecific and may be confused with gastroenteritis. ⋯ Although controlled clinical studies of the treatment of mushroom poisoning are lacking, recommendations based on the experience of various authors have been established. Penicillin G and silymarin seem to be useful. The development of new techniques of extracorporeal detoxification, mainly MARS, may represent an important support system in the treatment of these patients.

Review[Gastrointestinal anisakiasis. Study of a series of 25 patients].
Infection with the parasite Anisakis simplex is common in Japan and northern European countries. The number of reported cases in Spain has increased since the first description in 1991. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the incidence, clinical patterns, histopathological lesions, treatment, and outcome of Anisakis simplex infection in our environment. ⋯ Infection with Anisakis simplex should be investigated in patients with abdominal pain after intake of raw fish, ileitis of unclear origin, or eosinophilic gastroenteritis.
