Warm HTK donor pretreatment reduces liver injury during static cold storage in experimental rat liver transplantation.
Organ shortage has led to an increased number of transplantations from extended criteria donors. These organs are more vulnerable to ischemia-reperfusion injury. Thus, improvement of organ preservation is needed. HTK is a widely used preservation solution for static cold storage in liver transplantation. The present study was to investigate the beneficial effect of warm HTK donor pretreatment on liver preservation. ⋯ The new concept of warm HTK pretreatment significantly reduced ischemia-reperfusion injury. The reduced ischemia-reperfusion injury was due to MMP inhibition. Warm HTK donor pretreatment is easy to handle and could further improve HTK's potency in liver preservation.

Diagnostic and prognostic roles of soluble CD22 in patients with Gram-negative bacterial sepsis.
Soluble CD22 (sCD22) is a fragment of CD22, a B cell-specific membrane protein that negatively regulates B-cell receptor signaling. To date, sCD22 has only been regarded as a tumor marker of B-cell malignancies. Its expression in infectious diseases has not yet been assessed. ⋯ Serum sCD22 is a novel inflammatory mediator released during infection. This soluble biomarker plays a potential role in the diagnosis of Gram-negative bacterial sepsis, with a diagnostic accuracy as efficient as that of PCT or IL-6. Furthermore, sCD22 is more valuable to predict the outcomes in patients with sepsis than PCT or IL-6. The present study suggested that sCD22 might be potentially useful in supplementing current criteria for sepsis.

Development and validation of a predictive score for perioperative transfusion in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma undergoing liver resection.
Liver resection is a major surgery requiring perioperative blood transfusion. Predicting the need for blood transfusion for patients undergoing liver resection is of great importance. The present study aimed to develop and validate a model for predicting transfusion requirement in HBV-related hepatocellular carcinoma patients undergoing liver resection. ⋯ We have developed and validated an integer-based risk score to predict perioperative transfusion for patients undergoing liver resection in a high-volume surgical center. This score allows identifying patients at a high risk and may alter transfusion practices.

Pancreaticoduodenectomy with portal vein/superior mesenteric vein resection for patients with pancreatic cancer with venous invasion.
With the development of new surgical techniques, pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) with portal vein or superior mesenteric vein (PV/SMV) resection has been used in the treatment of patients with borderline resectable pancreatic cancer. However, opinions of surgeons differ in the effectiveness of this surgical technique. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of this approach in patients with pancreatic cancer. ⋯ The tumor has a higher chance of venous invasion if preoperative imagings indicate that it juxtaposes with the vessel. Lumbodorsal pain is the chief complaint. Patients with pancreatic cancer associated with PV involvement should receive PDVR for R0 resection when preoperational assessment shows the chance for eradication.

Preoperative serum liver enzyme markers for predicting early recurrence after curative resection of hepatocellular carcinoma.
Early recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is associated with worse prognosis after liver resection. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic value of common liver enzyme markers in HCC early recurrence after curative hepatectomy and to establish a simple predictive model for HCC early recurrence. ⋯ Preoperative common liver enzyme markers, LDH and AST/ALT ratio, were independently associated with early recurrence of HCC. The combination of serum liver enzyme markers with AFP, resection margin and TNM stage better predicted early recurrence of HCC after curative resection in a simple multi-factor model.
