Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialFurther evaluation of docosahexaenoic acid in patients with retinitis pigmentosa receiving vitamin A treatment: subgroup analyses.
To determine whether docosahexaenoic acid will slow the course of retinal degeneration in subgroups of patients with retinitis pigmentosa who are receiving vitamin A. ⋯ For patients with retinitis pigmentosa beginning vitamin A therapy, addition of docosahexaenoic acid, 1200 mg/d, slowed the course of disease for 2 years. Among patients on vitamin A for at least 2 years, a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids (> or =0.20 g/d) slowed the decline in visual field sensitivity.

To determine whether a therapeutic dose of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid, will slow the course of retinal degeneration in adult patients with retinitis pigmentosa who are also receiving vitamin A. ⋯ In patients assigned to receive 15 000 IU/d of vitamin A, this randomized trial showed that 1200 mg/d of docosahexaenoic acid supplementation over a 4-year interval did not, on average, slow the course of disease in patients with retinitis pigmentosa.

Multifocal electroretinographic evaluation of long-term hydroxychloroquine users.
To observe the long-term effects of hydroxychloroquine sulfate on retinal electrical activity by multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) and to evaluate the regional variation of retinal dysfunction in subjects with hydroxychloroquine retinopathy. ⋯ Long-term hydroxychloroquine use may be associated with mfERG abnormalities. The mfERG appears to detect retinal physiological change earlier than visual acuity testing, color vision testing, or Amsler grid testing can. The greatest value of the mfERG is in differentiating a retinal cause and, hence, providing important evidence for hydroxychloroquine toxicity, for whatever visual field loss is apparent on perimetry.

Sunlight and the 10-year incidence of age-related maculopathy: the Beaver Dam Eye Study.
To examine the association of sunlight exposure and indicators of sun sensitivity with the 10-year incidence of age-related maculopathy (ARM). ⋯ Few significant relationships between environmental exposure to light and the 10-year incidence and progression of ARM were found in the Beaver Dam Eye Study. Consistent with results from the baseline and 5-year follow-up examinations, significant associations were found between extended exposure to the summer sun and the 10-year incidence of early ARM and increased retinal pigment. A protective effect of hat and sunglasses use by participants while in their teens and 30s against the 10-year incidence of soft indistinct drusen and retinal pigment epithelial depigmentation was also found, but only in those who reported the highest amount of sun exposure during the same periods.
