Simple outpatient postoperative analgesia using an orbital catheter after enucleation.
To evaluate an indwelling orbital catheter, placed at enucleation, for repeatable delivery of local anesthetic on an outpatient basis. ⋯ The orbital pain-control catheter allows a caregiver to easily and repeatedly deliver local anesthetic to the operative site following enucleation, resulting in effective postoperative analgesia while the patient recovers at home.

Rapid identification of germline mutations in retinoblastoma by protein truncation testing.
To demonstrate the utility of protein truncation testing (PTT) for rapid detection and sequencing of germline mutations in the retinoblastoma tumor suppressor gene (RB1). ⋯ Protein truncation testing is an effective, rapid single-modality screen for germline mutations in patients with retinoblastoma. When used as an initial screen, PTT can increase the yield of additional testing modalities, such as sequencing and chromosomal analysis, providing a timely and cost-effective approach for the diagnosis of heritable germline mutations in patients with retinoblastoma.Clinical Relevance The clinical application of PTT in retinoblastoma will improve detection of germline retinoblastoma mutations, which will supply critical information for prognosis, treatment planning, follow-up care, and genetic counseling.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialA randomized prospective clinical trial comparing laser subepithelial keratomileusis and photorefractive keratectomy.
To compare laser subepithelial keratomileusis (LASEK) and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in different eyes of the same subjects for subjective pain level, visual acuity, and corneal epithelial healing. ⋯ Laser subepithelial keratomileusis and PRK have similar postoperative pain thresholds and visual acuity recordings. However, the epithelial healing pattern for LASEK and PRK differs. No additional clinical benefit is seen from the LASEK procedure relative to the PRK procedure.
