Unfinished nursing care, missed care, and implicitly rationed care: State of the science review.
The purposes of this review of unfinished care were to: (1) compare conceptual definitions and frameworks associated with unfinished care and related synonyms (i.e. missed care, implicitly rationed care; and care left undone); (2) compare and contrast approaches to instrumentation; (3) describe prevalence and patterns; (4) identify antecedents and outcomes; and (5) describe mitigating interventions. ⋯ Unfinished care is a significant problem in acute care hospitals internationally. Prioritization strategies of nurses leave patients vulnerable to unmet educational, emotional, and psychological needs. Key limitations of the science include the threat of common method/source bias, a lack of transparency regarding the use of combined samples and secondary analysis, inconsistency in the reporting format for unfinished care prevalence, and a paucity of intervention studies.

To establish the reporting quality of trials published in leading nursing journals and investigate associations between CONSORT Statement or trial registration endorsment and reporting of design elements. ⋯ Simple endorsement of the CONSORT Statement and trials registration is insufficient action to encourage improvement of the quality of trial reporting across the most important of trial design elements.

The debate on whether individuals want their family to be present during cardiopulmonary resuscitation continues to be a contentious issue, but there is little analysis of the predictors of the general public's opinion. The aim of this population based study was to identify factors that predict public support for having family present during cardiopulmonary resuscitation. ⋯ Individual support for being present during cardiopulmonary resuscitation varies according to; sex, prior exposure and if the family member who is being resuscitated is a family member, their child or the person themselves. A considerable proportion of the public have not considered nor planned for the option of being present during a cardiac arrest of an adult relative. Clinicians may find it useful to explain the experiences of other people who have been present when supporting families to make informed decisions about their involvement in emergency interventions.

To review the effect of a vascular access team on the incidence of central line-associated bloodstream infections in infants admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit. ⋯ A vascular access team is a promising intervention to decrease central line-associated bloodstream infections in infants admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit. However, level of evidence for effectiveness is low. Future research is required to improve the strength of evidence for vascular access teams.

To investigate and describe the content, dissemination and effects of case management interventions for informal caregivers of older adults, focusing on outcomes related to patients' activities of daily living, nutrition assessment, pain measurement, depression, length of stay and to caregivers' satisfaction and difficulties. ⋯ Research of case management interventions for informal caregivers is very limited. This review identifies knowledge about case management as an intervention for informal caregivers to older patients, suggesting strengths and weaknesses for future interventions when informal caregivers are involved.
