Three patients who showed an allergic reaction to latex products are described. By means of history, skin tests, measurement of IgE antibodies against latex and challenge tests the diagnosis could be established. ⋯ Latex allergy should be considered when evaluating 'idiopathic' anaphylaxis during an operation. Moreover, latex allergy may be the cause of occupational rhinitis and asthma.

Case Reports[Peroperative anaphylactic reactions due to latex allergy].
A 10-year-old girl with spina bifida underwent surgery to increase the capacity of her neurogenic bladder using an isolated loop of intestine. During the operation serious circulatory and respiratory problems occurred after the peritoneum was opened, when the ileum was manipulated using gloves containing latex. Latex allergy can lead to potentially fatal anaphylactic reactions. A survey is presented of the risk groups, together with measures recently advocated in the literature to detect latex allergy and to avoid major reactions.

Case Reports[Resuscitation in heart arrest due to severe hypothermia].
Two patients were resuscitated after cardiopulmonary arrest due to severe hypothermia. The first patient, a 76-year-old man, had ventricular fibrillation resistant to conventional therapy; he was rapidly rewarmed by means of cardiopulmonary bypass. In the second patient, a 77-year-old woman, classical resuscitation led to restoration of spontaneous circulation. ⋯ We conclude that rapid rewarming with cardiopulmonary bypass is the treatment of choice in severely hypothermic patients presenting with cardiac arrest that is resistant to conventional therapy. Hemodialysis seems a suitable technique in patients who remain deeply hypothermic after resuscitation. However, it is difficult to assess its value because of the lack of clinical studies comparing this technique with other procedures.

The childhood form of discitis was diagnosed in a 2-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy. They presented with an antalgic posture, muscular defense and a positive Gowers sign. Characteristic symptoms of this childhood discitis form the triad: unexplained fever, increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate and symptomatic narrowing of an intervertebral space.

Case Reports[Cervical myelopathy as complication of manual therapy in a patient with a narrow cervical canal].
A 31-year-old man had manipulative therapy because of pain in the neck, the left shoulder and the left arm. Immediately after cervical traction he developed neurological symptoms. ⋯ The patient had a rather narrow cervical canal. Six weeks after treatment with external fixation and corticosteroids the situation had improved markedly, with remaining hypesthesia in both hands and the right leg.
