Currently used glioblastoma cultures have many disadvantages and are being replaced by short-term cultures. However, these may include normal brain cells. ⋯ The presence of normal cells in short-term glioblastoma cultures may be caused by the infiltrative growth of these tumors. Our comparative analysis of morphological, growth and cytoskeletal properties revealed similarities between glioblastoma and normal brain cultures. In this study, the majority (28/30) of short-term glioblastoma showed limited life spans, similar to normal cells lacking spontaneous immortalization. The use of short-term glioblastoma cultures has two main problematic areas: cultures may contain a major subpopulation of normal "glia-like" cells; or they may contain the inital phases of spontaneously immortalized glioblastoma cells bearing properties of permanent cell lines (Tab. 1, Fig. 2, Ref. 19).

Severe acute maternal morbidity (SAMM) is a state of the woman, when she nearly died, but survived. The aim of study was to find out the exact incidence of SAMM in Slovakia, establishment of functional surveillance system and improve quality of health care. ⋯ The incidence of SAMM and especially incidence of peripartum haemorrhage and peripartum hysterectomy in Slovakia is one of the highest in Europe. To decrease incidence and improve management and outcome of patients, regular audit of SAMM is needed (Tab. 3, Fig. 2, Ref. 30).

Methamphetamine (Meth) is one of the most important central nervous system (CNS) stimulant abuse drugs that cause long-term or permanent damage to different regions of the brain, particularly hippocampus, by neuronal apoptosis and inflammation. In this study, we evaluated Nod-like Receptor Protein 3(NLRP3) and Nod-like Receptor Protein1 (NLRP1) Inflammasome Activation in the Hippocampal Region of postmortem Meth Chronic User. ⋯ Chronic Meth abuse could result in increases of NLRP1 and NLRP3 and induction of inflammation and apoptosis in the hippocampus in Meth groups (Tab. 1, Fig. 9, Ref. 40).

Nicotine causes cell death in many cell lines. Morphine at low concentrations has protective effects against cell death. We investigated the effects of low concentration of morphine on nicotine-induced cell death in PC12 cells. ⋯ Morphine as a pain reducer drug, in low concentrations, can protect PC12 cells from nicotine-induced cell death (Fig. 7, Ref. 59).
