Clinical swabs with suspected viral infection are usually transported in virus transport medium (VMT). During epidemics/pandemics, tampons without VTM would be more suitable for saving space and cost. This study was conducted to verify the applicability of throat swabs without VTM in the diagnosis/screening of enteroviral infections by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in a volunteer study group. ⋯ When processed immediately, the results for all three swab types were compatible. Swabs without VTM may be used for collection of clinical samples in the diagnosis of suspected enteroviral infections or as potential screening tools for enteroviruses (Tab. 2, Ref. 15). Keywords: enterovirus infection, swab, transport medium, PCR, molecular diagnostics.

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a widespread intense stage of diabetes mellitus that causes vision-effecting anomalies in the retina. It is a medical health condition on the strength of fluctuating glucose level in the blood that can result in vision loss in case of severity. ⋯ In the current research, an innovative HHO-CBL was developed for identifying the primary causes that lead to the formation of microaneurysms and diagnosing all five grades of DR. According to the acquired results presented through the evaluation performance metrics indicates that the pre-early diagnosis and five grade classification using feature embedding technique outperformed the other prevailing approaches (Tab. 4, Fig. 10, Ref. 31).

For many years, the physicians are searching for easily measurable marker of immune response to the stress and inflammation. More than, 20 years ago Zahorec (2001) proposed neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as an easy available and valid biomarker of inflammation, stress, and activation of immune system. ⋯ We provide many evidences of clinical research which confirm that Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio is a very sensitive marker of inflammation, stress reliable and valid parameter in everyday clinical practice. NLR (Zahorec index) is an effective tool for diagnosis of infection and severity of disease of variable etiologies. NLR reflect the grade of inflammation in cancer disease, which has a significant impact on the prognosis of cancer patients. Zahorec index should be used routinely in emergency medicine, surgery and perioperative medicine as a marker of the severity of affliction, infection, and complications in general. NLR may help physicians in decision making process for early diagnosis and therapy. NLR should be investigated frequently in acute states (sepsis, shock, peritonitis, stroke, trauma) on a daily basis, in subacute states few times per week (during hospital stay), and few times per year in chronic disease (cancer, diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease, psychiatry disorders). NLR has a deep biological sense connecting together function of three suprasystems: immune, endocrinne and autonomous nervous system (Tab. 2, Fig. 3, Ref. 86).

The aim of the study was to hihglight the benefits and safety of the endoscopic transsphenoidal pituitary gland tumor surgery. ⋯ The endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery of pituitary gland tumors has become preferred becouse of its safety, low rate of complications and minimal trauma to the patient (Fig. 5, Ref. 13).

Anterior cervical discectomy (ACD) is used in the surgical treatment of cervical degenerative disc disease (DDD). Besides the low incidence of postoperative complications, they can affect the postoperative course for patients. ⋯ The result of our study documented a low incidence of postoperative complications after ACD. We identified high BMI level, increased blood loss, and prolonged operation time as independent risk factors for the increased incidence of postoperative complications. Moreover, we demonstrated that postoperative complications do not significantly influence the patient's quality of life (Tab. 5, Ref. 32).
