Association between peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator-1alpha gene polymorphisms and type 2 diabetes in southern Chinese population: role of altered interaction with myocyte enhancer factor 2C.
Some single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator (PGC)-1alpha gene have been reported to be associated with type 2 diabetes in different populations, and studies on Chinese patients yielded controversial results. The objective of this case-control study was to explore the relationship between SNPs of PGC-1alpha and type 2 diabetes in the southern Chinese population and to determine whether the common variants: Gly482Ser and Thr394Thr, in the PGC-1alpha gene have any impacts on interaction with myocyte enhancer factor (MEF) 2C. ⋯ The results suggested that the 482Ser variant of PGC-1alpha conferred the susceptibility to type 2 diabetes in the southern Chinese population. The underlying mechanism may be attributable, at least in part, to the altered interaction between the different variants (Gly482Ser, Thr394Thr) in the PGC-1alpha gene and MEF2C.

Characteristics of and strategies for patients with severe burn-blast combined injury.
Severe burn-blast combined injury is a great challenge to medical teams for its high mortality. The aim of this study was to elucidate the clinical characteristics of the injury and to present our clinical experiences on the treatment of such cases. ⋯ Burn-blast combined injury may cause multiple organ dysfunctions, especially coagulopathy. Proper judgment of patients' condition, energetic anticoagulant treatment, early closure of burn wounds, rational use of antibiotics, nutritional support, intensive insulin treatment, timely and effective support and protection of organ function are the most important contributory factors in successful treatment of burn-blast combined injuries.

Randomized Controlled TrialRandomized controlled trial of the absorbency of four dressings and their effects on the evaporation of burn wounds.
Wound dressings are divided into traditional and new types. The new dressings are thought to accelerate wound healing. The purpose of this study was to supplement the scanty data on the absorbency of the new dressings and their effects on evaporation from the burn surface. ⋯ All four dressings have water retention capacity while carbon fiber dressing has the highest absorption rate and shows the best containment and evaporation from the burn wound.

Influence of blood glucose on the expression of glucose trans-porter proteins 1 and 3 in the brain of diabetic rats.
The delivery of glucose from the blood to the brain involves its passage across the endothelial cells of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which is mediated by the facilitative glucose transporter protein 1 (GLUT(1)), and then across the neural cell membranes, which is mediated by GLUT(3). This study aimed to evaluate the dynamic influence of hyperglycemia on the expression of these GLUTs by measuring their expression in the brain at different blood glucose levels in a rat model of diabetes. This might help to determine the proper blood glucose threshold level in the treatment of diabetic apoplexy. ⋯ Chronic hyperglycemia downregulates GLUT(1) and GLUT(3) expression at both mRNA and protein levels in the rat brain, which is not due to the decrease of the density of microvessels. The downregulation of GLUT(1) and GLUT(3) expression might be the adaptive reaction of the body to prevent excessive glucose entering the cell that may lead to cell damage.

Randomized Controlled TrialT3/T4 thoracic sympathictomy and compensatory sweating in treatment of palmar hyperhidrosis.
Compensatory sweating (CS) is one of the most common postoperative complications after thoracic sympathectomy, sympathicotomy or endoscopic sympathetic block (ESB) for palmar hyperhidrosis. This study was conducted to examine the relevance between CS and the sympathetic segment being transected in the surgical treatment of palmar hyperhidrosis, and thus to detect the potential mechanism of the occurrence of CS. ⋯ The rates of occurrence and severity of CS are lowered with the lower sympathetic chain being transected.
