Accuracy and complications of posterior C2 screw fixation using intraoperative three-dimensional fluoroscopy-based navigation.
The peculiar and highly variable C2 anatomy can make screw fixation more challenging and prone to potential vertebral artery or neurologic injury. Conventional C-arm fluoroscopy has several drawbacks. The aim of this research was to evaluate the accuracy of posterior C2 screw fixation using intraoperative three-dimensional fluoroscopy-based navigation (ITFN) and assess the perioperative complication rate related to screw placement. ⋯ ITFN is a safe, accurate, and effective tool for posterior C2 fixation.

Two congenital coronary abnormalities affecting heart function: anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery and congenital left main coronary artery atresia.
The anomalous origin of the left coronary artery (LCA) from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) and congenital left main coronary artery atresia (CLMCA-A) are two kinds of very rare coronary heart diseases which affect heart function profoundly. This study aimed to retrospectively illustrate the clinical features and therapy experience of ALCAPA and CLMCA-A patients. ⋯ ALCAPA and CLMCA-A are two rare coronary artery abnormalities that affect cardiac function in infants and children. In younger patients with cardiomegaly and heart dysfunction these two congenital coronary diseases should be noticed.

Kyphoplasty versus vertebroplasty for the treatment of malignant vertebral compression fractures caused by metastases: a retrospective study.
There are few comparative studies regarding kyphoplasty (KP) and vertebroplasty (VP) for the treatment of painful vertebral compression fractures (VCF) in patients with cancer. The purpose of this study is to retrospectively compare KP with VP in pain improvement, cement leakage incidence, and the cost of treatment of malignant VCF. ⋯ VP and KP are both effective in providing pain relief for patients with cancer-related VCF. KP provides no greater degree of pain improvement. KP is associated with a lower rate of cement leakage compared with VP. VP is associated with lower cost and shorter postoperative hospital stay in China.

Comparative StudyComparison of epinephrine and Shen-Fu injection on resuscitation outcomes in a porcine model of prolonged cardiac arrest.
Epinephrine has been used as a first-choice vasopressor drug for cardiac arrest (CA) since 1974. However, the administration of epinephrine is controversial. This study aims to compare the effects of Shen-Fu injection (SFI) and epinephrine on resuscitation outcomes in a porcine model of prolonged CA. ⋯ SFI shortened the time to ROSC and decreased the number of shocks, similar to epinephrine. However, SFI improved oxygen metabolism, and produced a better hemodynamic status compared with epinephrine. SFI might be a potentially vasopressor drug for the treatment of CA.

Spontaneous brain activity in chronic smokers revealed by fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation analysis: a resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging study.
Nicotine is primarily rsponsible for the highly addictive properties of cigarettes. Similar to other substances, nicotine dependence is related to many important brain regions, particular in mesolimbic reward circuit. This study was to further reveal the alteration of brain function activity during resting state in chronic smokers by fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF) based on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), in order to provide the evidence of neurobiological mechanism of smoking. ⋯ In smokers during rest, the activity of addiction related regions were increased and the activity of smoking feeling, memory, related regions were also changed. The resting state activity changes in many regions were associated with the cumulative amount of nicotine intake and the severity of nicotine dependence.
