Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialLong-term results of prophylactic cranial irradiation for limited-stage small-cell lung cancer in complete remission.
Brain metastasis is one of the most important causes of treatment failure in patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC). This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) on survival and brain metastases for patients with limited stage small cell lung cancer in complete remission. ⋯ For patients with limited stage SCLC responding completely to chemotherapy plus radiotherapy, PCI can decrease the incidence of brain metastases and improve survival rate.

Involvement of midgastric transverse band in gastric emptying delay of functional dyspepsia.
Midgastric transverse band (MTB) was first observed over 100 years ago, after that many researchers worked on the subject postulated its physiologic role and the role in gastrointestinal diseases, but its function remains unclear. With progress of imaging methods, the nature of MTB is unveiling. In this study we investigated the effect of MTB on the gastric emptying delay in functional dyspepsia (FD) and explored the mechanism. ⋯ Gastric emptying delay is related to enlarged MTB area. Some dyspeptic symptoms may be induced by abnormal distribution and increased retention of food in distal stomach. MTB, being like atria-ventricular valve that controls blood flow in heart, regulates transport, distribution, and emptying of food in the stomach.

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of normal human brain and glioma: a quantitative in vivo study.
In vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) provides a noninvasive method of examining a wide variety of cerebral metabolites in both healthy subjects and patients with various brain diseases. Absolute metabolite concentrations have been determined using external and internal standards with known concentrations. When an external standard is placed beside the head, variations in signal amplitudes due to B1 field inhomogeneity and static field inhomogeneity may occur. Hence an internal standard is preferable. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively analyze the metabolite concentrations in normal adult brains and gliomas by in vivo proton MRS using the fully relaxed water signal as an internal standard. ⋯ Quantitative analysis of in vivo proton MR spectra using the fully relaxed water signal as an internal standard is useful. The concentrations of NAA and the ratios of NAA/H2O and NAA/Cho conduce to discriminating between the glioma and normal brain, and also between the low-grade glioma and high-grade glioma.

Investigation and analysis of incidence of awareness in patients undergoing cardiac surgery in Beijing, China.
Awareness under general anesthesia is a serious complication which leads to psychiatric disorders. The incidence of awareness in patients undergoing cardiac surgery has been reported in as many as 1.5% - 23% in foreign countries. But so far, medical literature about awareness during cardiac surgery is still rare in China. Therefore, we investigated the incidence of awareness in patients undergoing different kinds of cardiac surgery, the phases when awareness occurred and the effect of cardiopulmonary bypass on the incidence of awareness in coronary artery bypass grafting in Beijing. ⋯ Awareness mainly occurs before bypass grafting or CPB in cardiac surgery. Most cases with awareness have auditory perceptions. CPB is not a main factor which affects the incidence of awareness of CABG. Surgical types do not affect the incidence of awareness of patients under CPB.

Paraoxonase gene cluster variations associated with coronary heart disease in Chinese Han women.
The oxidative modification of low-density lipoprotein in the artery wall is currently believed to be central to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Paraoxonase (PON1), an enzyme located on high-density lipoprotein (HDL), can prevent low-density lipoprotein (LDL) from oxidation at a certain extent. Recent studies show two other members of paraoxonase gene family, PON2 and PON3, possess antioxidant properties similar to PON1. The aim of the present study was to explore the role of PON gene cluster on coronary heart disease (CHD) in Chinese Han women. ⋯ This association study suggested that lower plasma PON1 activity increased the risk of CHD in Chinese women, which may be mediated by the higher frequency of -107T allele in cases. Haplotype analyses indicated that there might be some synergistic effects between the PON1 -107C > T and PON2 S311C polymorphisms.
