Human infection with a novel avian-origin influenza A (H7N9) virus: serial chest radiographic and CT findings.
Rapidly progressive pneumonia infection with H7N9 virus is a novel disease, and limited information is available concerning serial chest radiographic and computed tomography (CT) findings. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in serial radiologic findings in patients with H7N9 pneumonia. ⋯ The most common radiologic findings at presentation are multifocal or diffuse areas of consolidation and GGOs in H7N9 pneumonia. HRCT in sequence can show more changes in rapid progression of disease and a slow decrease of both size and opacity of the lesions plays an important role in the evaluation of H7N9 pneumonia.

Effect of different resuscitation strategies on post-resuscitation brain damage in a porcine model of prolonged cardiac arrest.
The choice of a defibrillation or a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)-first strategy in the treatment of prolonged cardiac arrest (CA) is still controversial. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of defibrillation or CPR administered first on neurological prognostic markers in a porcine model of prolonged CA. ⋯ Defibrillation first may result in a shorter time to ROSC and lower biochemical markers of brain injury in a porcine model of 8-minute CA due to VF, but the choice of different resuscitation strategies did not affect the rate of ROSC and 24-hour survival.

Comparison between two types of "Scheuermann disease-like people": thoracolumbar disc herniation patients and healthy volunteers with radiological signs of Scheuermann's disease.
Scheuermann's disease (SD) is a spinal disorder and includes both a classic form and an atypical form. Interestingly, its existence among the general population as well as the disc disease patients is common. One of our previous studies showed that about 18% of the hospital staff members meet the SD criteria. On the other hand, another study has demonstrated that 95.2% of the symptomatic thoracolumbar disc herniation (STLDH) patients meet the SD criteria, which suggests that STLDH is very likely a special form of SD. The purpose of this study was to discriminate the factors contributing to the development of STLDH by comparing STLDH patients with the healthy SD-like hospital staff members. ⋯ Higher body weight, higher body mass index, larger thoracolumbar kyphosis, and more Schmorl's nodes and irregular endplates on MR may be associated with the development of STLDH in "SD-like people."

Profiles of and correlation between objective and subjective outcome assessments following open-door laminoplasty for cervical spondylotic myelopathy.
Open-door laminoplasty is widely used in the treatment of cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM). This study aimed to investigate the profiles of and correlation between objective and subjective short-term outcome assessments after open-door laminoplasty for CSM. ⋯ Patients benefit from surgery by postoperative restitution of neurological function with early recovery of sensory function, followed by a gradual transition to motor function improvement. At the early stage of recovery, improvement in the mJOA score essentially correlated with improvements in the physical domains of the SF-36, while at the later stage, mJOA score improvement was associated with improvements in both mental and physical domains of the SF-36.

Locking plate fixation combined with iliac crest bone autologous graft for proximal humerus comminuted fracture.
Although the use of an intramedullary fibular allograft together with locking plate fixation can provide additional medial support and prevent varus malalignment in displaced proximal humeral fractures with promising results, the fibular autograft donor site often sustains significant trauma and cannot restore the articular surface of comminuted fractures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of a locking plate and crest bone autologous graft for treating proximal humerus comminuted fractures. ⋯ Locking plate fixation combined with an iliac crest bone graft is an effective technique for treating proximal humerus comminuted fractures.
