Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha regulates the role of vascular endothelial growth factor on pulmonary arteries of rats with hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension.
Hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1alpha) is one of the pivotal mediators in the response of lungs to decreased oxygen availability, and increasingly has been implicated in the pathogenesis of pulmonary hypertension. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a downstream target gene of HIF-1alpha, plays an important role in the pathogenesis of hypoxic pulmonary hypertension and hypoxic pulmonary artery remodelling. In this study, we investigated the dynamic expression of HIF-1alpha and VEGF in pulmonary artery of rats with hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension. ⋯ HIF-1alpha and VEGF are both involved in the pathogenesis of hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension in rats.

Case ReportsClinical phenotypes, ALK1 gene mutation and level of related plasma proteins in Chinese hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.
We determined the diagnosis of hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasis (HHT) in a suspected HHT family, identified ALK1 gene mutation and established a gene diagnosis method of HHT. The level of related plasma proteins (transforming growth factor beta and thrombomodulin) were also analyzed. ⋯ Chinese HHT individuals have mutant ALK1 gene, a C1231T variation on exon 8 of ALK1 is responsible for HHT clinical phenotypes in this family. ALK1 gene analysis, together with special clinical phenotypes and family history, provides a reliable method in diagnosing HHT. In affected HHT subjects, plasma TGFbeta levels were not obviously different from those of normal subject; while plasma TM concentration was significantly lower than that in normal subjects. The significance and mechanism remain to be elucidated.

The iron catalyzed lipid peroxidation plays an important role in the autodestruction of the injured spinal cord. This study was to detect the antioxidation of melatonin against spinal cord injury (SCI) in rats. ⋯ Melatonin can reduce the level of lipid peroxidation and prevent damage to the spinal cord of rat.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialThe supraorbital keyhole approach with eyebrow incisions for treating lesions in the anterior fossa and sellar region.
Keyhole surgery has developed since the 1990s as a less invasive therapeutic strategy for intracranial lesions, initially for the treatment of intracranial aneurysms. The purpose of this study was to describe and evaluate the results of surgical treatment of lesions in the anterior fossa and sellar region via a supraorbital keyhole approach using eyebrow incisions. ⋯ The supraorbital keyhole approach using an eyebrow incision is safe, effective, and both suitable and convenient for treating lesions in the anterior fossa and sellar region, with almost no adverse consequences on the facial features of patients.
