Detection of A3243G point mutation in mitochondrial DNA from 10 cases of MELAS.
To search for A3243G point mutations in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from 10 cases of mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis and strokelike episodes (MELAS). ⋯ All 10 MELAS patients were found to have the mtDNA A3243G mutation in their muscle and/or blood. The A3243G mutation seems to be sporadic in 5 of the families examined, suggesting the mechanism of de novo mutation for the pathogenesis of their MELAS syndrome.

To investigate the immune privilege induced by the Fas ligand (FasL) expressed by cotransplanted testicular Sertoli cells in islet allografts, and the effect of FasL gene transfection on islet cells in pancreatic islet allografts. ⋯ FasL-expressing testicular Sertoli cells can induce apoptosis of activated lymphocytes. Cotransplantation of testicular cells allows long-term survival of allogeneic islets because of immune privilege, but the direct expression of FasL on islet allografts infected with AdV-FasL accelerates islet rejection via islet apoptosis and granulocyte infiltration.

Long-term follow-up results of dural reconstruction without bone graft at anterior skull-base defects.
To clarify whether it is necessary to reconstruct bone defects at the anterior skull base. ⋯ At normal intracranial pressure, if the dura mater is repaired properly at the skull-base defects and reinforced with a pedicled pericranial flap, encephalomeningocele and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage can be prevented. It may not be necessary to make free bone grafts when the size of the cranial base bone defect is smaller than 4 cm.

Pump models assessed by transesophageal echocardiography during cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Transesophageal echocardiography was performed during closed-chest cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in in-hospital cardiac arrest to further explore the hemodynamic mechanism of CPR. ⋯ These observations favor the cardiac pump theory as the predominant hemodynamic mechanism of forward blood flow during CPR in human beings.

Ventricular remodeling by Scutellarein treatment in spontaneously hypertensive rats.
To observe reversal of ventricular remodeling by the protein kinase C inhibitor Scutellarein in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). ⋯ Scutellarein can reverse ventricular remodeling, improve myocardial stiffness and protect heart cardiac muscle.
