Cervical disc arthroplasty with ProDisc-C artificial disc: 5-year radiographic follow-up results.
Cervical disc arthroplasty is an alternative surgery to standard cervical decompression and fusion for disc degeneration. Different types of cervical disc prosthesis are used in China. The aim of this study was to evaluate the radiographic outcomes of cervical arthroplasty using the ProDisc-C prosthesis. ⋯ ProDisc-C arthroplasty had acceptable radiographic results at 5-year follow-up. The range of motion was preserved. However, more than 60% of the patients developed heterotopic ossification.

Changes in arterial blood pressure induced by passive leg raising predict hypotension during the induction of sedation in critically ill patients without severe cardiac dysfunction.
Hypotension due to the induction of sedation with dexmedetomidine infusion may be harmful in critically ill patients. Changes in pulse pressure induced by the passive leg raising test (PLR-ΔPP) as marker of fluid responsiveness, assessed prior to sedation, may predict hemodynamic changes. The present study was to investigate the power of the PLR test in critically ill patients in predicting hypotension induced by the induction of dexmedetomidine sedation. ⋯ The fluid responsiveness assessment pre-sedation was found to predict blood pressure fluctuation during the induction of dexmedetomidine sedation. The PLR test conducted prior to sedation may be a useful tool to identify patients with a high risk of hemodynamic events and may be used to indicate the need for prophylactic treatment.

Significance of low serum vitamin D for infection risk, disease severity and mortality in critically ill patients.
Hospitalized patients often have higher rate of vitamin D deficiency than healthy people. Vitamin D levels below normal are associated with hospital stay, increased incidence of adverse prognosis and increased mortality of a number of diseases. Whether there is a relationship between vitamin D levels and infection or sepsis in the critically ill is still unclear. This study will explore the relationship between vitamin D levels and risk of infection, assessment for disease severity, and predictor of mortality. ⋯ Clinically, serum concentration of vitamin D is not an indicator for diagnosis and assessment in critically ill patients (ClinicalTrial.gov identifier NCT01636232).

Factors influencing postoperative mortality one year after surgery for hip fracture in Chinese elderly population.
Disability and death following hip fracture is becoming more common as the population ages. Previous reports have focused on the selection of internal fixation methods and the analysis of the perioperative therapeutic results in the Chinese population. Few studies have focused on factors influencing medium and long term survival after surgery for hip fracture. We conducted a retrospective study on the factors influencing survival one year after hip fracture surgery in our elderly Chinese population to provide a reference for improved treatment and to enhance efficacy. ⋯ Full consideration of medium-/long-term risk factors in the treatment of hip fracture in the elderly, selection of appropriate anesthesia and treatment methods, and improved pre-surgical health conditions would reduce postoperative mortality and enhance surgical efficacy.

ReviewNeonatal pulse oximetry screening improves detecting of critical congenital heart disease.
Life-threatening critical congenital heart disease (cCHD) is often not detected in the neonatal period. Unrecognized cCHD results in high morbidity and mortality rates. As a non-invasive, convenient, quick and accurate measuring method, pulse oximetry is considered to be a promising strategy to screen for cCHD in neonates. This article is a review on the neonatal pulse oximetry screening for cCHD. ⋯ Neonatal pulse oximetry screening improves detection of cCHD. Further studies should be carried out before it becomes one of the routine newborn screening programs.
