Randomized Controlled TrialRelief of abdominal pain by morphine without altering physical signs in acute appendicitis.
Abdominal pain is a common symptom among patients with acute appendicitis, yet these patients have long been denied relief from suffering because of widespread misconceptions associated with the use of opioids. We determined whether morphine hydrochloride masked the physical signs in adults with acute appendicitis and assessed the efficacy of morphine in relieving abdominal pain. ⋯ Morphine relieved abdominal pain and improved the patients' cooperation for treatment and care. Furthermore, the morphine did not mask the physical signs of acute appendicitis.

Primary effect of dual growing rod technique for the treatment of severe scoliosis in young children.
Treatment of rapidly progressing scoliosis in young children is a challenge for spine surgeons. Some surgeons had begun to use dual growing rod technique for treatment of rapidly progressing scoliosis in young children and had achieved acceptable results. The aim of this study was to determine the primary results and complications of this new technique in China. ⋯ The dual growing rod technique was useful in the management of rapidly progressing scoliosis in young children. This technique could control severe scoliosis, allow for spinal growth, and maintain the coronal and sagittal balance. But the technique has high complications requiring strict and regular follow-up.

Twelve cases of the pectoralis major muscle tendon rupture with surgical treatment-an average of 6.7-year follow-up.
Pectoralis major tendon rupture is a relatively rare injury leading to both functional and cosmetic deficiency. The peak torque of the pectoralis major is significantly decreased after conservational treatment of a total rupture. We suppose that surgical intervention is better choice. ⋯ Surgical treatment by anatomic tendon repair and accelerated rehabilitation can make recovery of strength and function of the pectoralis major muscle.

Effects of mixture of lidocaine and ropivacaine at different concentrations on the central nervous system and cardiovascular toxicity in rats.
Lidocaine and ropivacaine are often combined in clinical practice to obtain a rapid onset and a prolonged duration of action. However, the systemic toxicity of their mixture at different concentrations is unclear. This study aimed to compare the systemic toxicity of the mixture of ropivacaine and lidocaine at different concentrations when administered intravenously in rats. ⋯ The systemic toxicity of the mixture of 1.0% ropivacaine and 2.0% lidocaine is the greatest while that of 1.0% lidocaine is the least. However, the systemic toxicity of the mixture of 1.0% ropivacaine and 1.0% lidocaine is similar to that of 0.5% ropivacaine alone.

Meta AnalysisImaging of low back pain: comparative role of high intensity zone in diagnosing the discogenic low back pain with evidence-based radiology.
Discography is a gold standard for the diagnosis of the low back pain (LBP), but it has potential dangers for the development of discitis, cerebral spinal fluid leakage, retroperitoneal bleeding, acute new back pain and the tremendous radiation exposure to the patient. Using "evidence-based radiology" methods, the comparative roles of high intensity zone (HIZ) in diagnosing discogenic LBP were evaluated. ⋯ For suspected discogenic LBP, HIZ is limited for the diagnosis if HIZ is positive, which suggests further discography. In contrast HIZ is a good test for diagnosis if HIZ is negative, which indicates the disease can be excluded.
