The cross-sectional and longitudinal association of the BODE index with quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
The body mass index, airflow obstruction, dyspnea, and exercise capacity (BODE) index was shown at predicting the risk of death, exacerbation and disease severity among patients with COPD, but few studies verified relationship between BODE index and health related quality of life (HRQoL) among Chinese COPD patients. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between BODE index and HRQoL in cross-sectional and longitudinal association analyses. ⋯ BODE index is associated with SGRQ score cross-sectionally and longitudinally among stable COPD patients. BODE index might have potential to be used as a sensitive tool to assess the status of quality of life and to monitor disease progression among stable COPD patients.

Propofol improves cardiac functional recovery after ischemia-reperfusion by upregulating nitric oxide synthase activity in the isolated rat hearts.
There are few studies to assess whether propofol attenuates myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury via a mechanism related to nitric oxide (NO) route, so we designed this randomized blinded experiment to observe the changes of NO contents, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity, NOS contents in the myocardium, and cardiac function in ischemic reperfused isolated rat hearts, and to assess the relation between myocardial NO system and cardioprotection of propofol. ⋯ In isolated rat hearts, propofol can improve cardiac functional recovery after ischemia-reperfusion by upregulating NOS activity in the myocardium. The NO system may play an important role in the preservation of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury produced by propofol.

Prospective evaluation of postoperative outcome after liver transplantation in hepatopulmonary syndrome patients.
Only a few reviews of small case series and individual case reports including a relatively small number of adult patients undergoing liver transplantation for hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) are available, and there has been no prospective evaluation of the long-term outcome of HPS patients after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of HPS in OLT patients with chronic end-stage liver-disease, and the short-term and long-term postoperative outcome of HPS patients after OLT. ⋯ Liver transplantation was an effective treatment for HPS. But the postoperative mortality rate following OLT in HPS patients was still much higher than that of patients without HPS.

Initial experiences of maintaining atrioventricular intrinsic conduction during cardiac resynchronization therapy in non-responders.
Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is a major breakthrough in therapy for advanced heart failure patients; however, a number of key clinical research questions remain, perhaps most importantly the issue of why apparently suitable patients do not respond to CRT. ⋯ Titrating AV intervals to get the true fusional QRS complexes composed of biventricular pacing and AV intrinsic conduction will be beneficial for non-responders to CRT. Maintaining AV intrinsic conduction during CRT may decrease the rates of non-responders to CRT.
