Several studies have reported that the single nucleotide polymorphism rs693 of Apo lipoprotein B gene is associated with high levels of plasma lipids and high body mass index, which are risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. The distribution of this single nucleotide polymorphism and its association with the phenotype depend on the genetic background of each population. ⋯ There is no significant association between single nucleotide polymorphism rs693 and body mass index nor lipid profile, in a sample of Colombian Caribbeans.

A 52-year-old female patient was admitted to our clinic with complaints of cough, sputum, fever and fatigue. The patient has been receiving immunosuppressive therapy for thrombocytopenic purpura for 5 years. ⋯ This is the first example of cavitary pneumonia due to Delftia acidovorans in an immunocompromised patient. We would like to emphasize that Delftia pneumonia should be considered in the differential diagnosis of pulmonary cavitary involvement in such patients.

Breast cancer is the most common neoplasia of women from all over the world especially women from Colombia. 5%-10% of all cases are caused by hereditary factors, 25% of those cases have mutations in the BRCA1/BRCA2 genes. ⋯ According to our results, the Colombian pacific population presents diverse mutational spectrum for BRCA genes that differs from the findings in other regions in the country.

Sandflies are known for having vector species of the tropical disease Leishmaniasis, a disease which is of an endemic nature in Western Boyacá, where the town of Otanche is one of the main source of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis. ⋯ It was established that, due to its abundance and vector precedent for the country and the area under study, Nyssomyia yuilli and Nyssomyia trapidoi constitute the species of phlebotominae which may be involved in the transmission of cutaneous Leishmaniasis in the region.
