Case ReportsLymphoplasmacyte-rich meningioma with atypical invasive nature.
A 12-year-old boy presented with a lymphoplasmacyte-rich (LPR) meningioma in the posterior fossa. The tumor was subtotally removed. ⋯ The Ki-67 staining index using MIB-1 monoclonal antibody was relatively high. (18)F-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography revealed high uptake in the tumor. These findings indicate the atypical nature of LPR meningioma.

Final report of the Japan Neurotrauma Data Bank project 1998-2001: 1,002 cases of traumatic brain injury.
A 4-year study (Japan Neurotrauma Data Bank) of the medical treatment of 1002 cases of traumatic brain injuries in Japan was conducted from 1998 to 2001 at 10 emergency medical centers. Patients with severe head injury were eligible for entry with a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 8 or less at admission. ⋯ An original data sheet with 392 items from multi-focal viewpoints, such as etiology of injury, pre-hospital care, initial treatment including neuro-intensive care unit, and surgical treatment, was created. The results show that the patient's age and mechanism of injury are the most important factors in the outcome.

Case ReportsCerebral venous sinus thrombosis associated with iron deficiency: two case reports.
Two patients presented with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) associated with iron deficiency. A 14-year-old man had thrombosis extending from the end of the superior sagittal sinus to the left transverse sinus. Severe dehydration after competitive sport had induced CVST. ⋯ The laboratory findings showed transient iron deficiency in the acute phase. Both patients received conservative treatment for dehydration and iron supplementation. These two cases indicate that iron deficiency is a risk factor for CVST.

Case ReportsLigamentum flavum hematoma in the cervical spine - case report.
A 67-year-old man presented with a rare case of ligamentum flavum hematoma manifesting as progressive tetraplegia following cervical traction therapy. Magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical spine showed a posterior mass that was continuous with the ligamentum flavum at the C3-4 levels. ⋯ We speculate that repeated trivial trauma to the degenerative ligamentum flavum was the main predisposing factor in the present case. Ligamentum flavum hematoma is a rare cause of spinal root or cord compression which typically occurs in the lower thoracic or lumbar spine, but may also appear in the cervical spine.

Case ReportsIntradural retroclival chordoma without bone involvement - case report.
A 63-year-old, previously healthy man presented with a rare large intradural retroclival chordoma without bone involvement. Computed tomography showed that the tumor was completely intradural and did not involve the bone, as confirmed at intraoperative inspection. ⋯ Complete resection is feasible for intradural extraosseous chordoma because of the sharply circumscribed margins and absence of bone involvement. Specialized skull base techniques should be used instead of conventional surgical approaches for intradural skull base chordoma.
