In the past few years, a distinct and multifactorial clinical entity called chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) that leads to decreased bone density and osteoporosis has been identified. The aim of this study was to assess the levels of the matrix metalloproteinase-1 and -2 (MMP-1 and MMP-2) in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients of various disease stages in correlation to other bone turnover markers (BTM). This study is an initial investigative approach to a possible role of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in the evaluation of bone disease in uremic patients. ⋯ In CKD patients MMP-1 serum levels may reflect increased bone turnover rates. Tendon entrapment as a consequence of forearm fracture is rare. Only a few such tendon incarcerations have been described in the literature. ⋯ Three tendons entrapped proximally to a previous fracture site is a unique incident. It indicates the need for a high level of suspicion to recognize and manage these severe complications timely. HIPPOKRATIA 2017, 21(1): 52-54.

The aim of this retrospective, case series was to report the clinical and radiological outcomes of plate fixation of AO Type C distal humeral fractures and to compare the two techniques, the double plate parallel fixation with the double plate orthogonal fixation. ⋯ Our results provide further evidence that double plate fixation is an adequate treatment option with satisfactory mid-term results for these fractures and indicate that both configurations are equally effective. HIPPOKRATIA 2017, 21(1): 38-42.

Soluble receptor of advanced glycation end-products (sRAGE) is widely expressed in various organs including male genital tract and spermatozoa. Their regulation depends on many simultaneous conditions that may occur. Male fertility is a multifactorial condition which is influenced by various parameters, some of which are detrimental to the spermatozoa. The aim of this study was to detect possible differences in sRAGE concentrations between serum and seminal plasma of infertile men, compared to fertile men population. ⋯ Serum and seminal plasma sRAGE concentrations seem to show variations worth considering between fertile and infertile men. Moreover, further research is required to elucidate the role of the sRAGEs and oxidative stress in male infertility. HIPPOKRATIA 2017, 21(1): 19-24.

The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of illicit drug use among medical students in Northern Greece, to identify the motivations for cannabis use and also to investigate the possible associations with smoking and alcohol misuse. ⋯ Smoking and binge drinking were found to be risk factors for illicit drug use, whereas no association was found with gender, age, study year and CAGE. HIPPOKRATIA 2017, 21(1): 13-18.
