Oral cancer is the eighth greatest generally diagnosed cancer amongst males worldwide and the fourth most generally malignancy amongst Taiwanese males. The pro-inflammatory adipocytokine visfatin promotes tumor growth. Elevated plasma visfatin levels have been identified in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), although the biological mechanisms underlying the involvement of visfatin in the pathogenesis of OSCC are not well understood. ⋯ We also examined the associations between these visfatin genotypes and OSCC histopathological prognostic factors (pathological stage, tumor status, lymph node status, and metastasis). We found that compared with subjects with the CC genotype of SNP rs11977021, those with the CT+TT genotype were less likely to progress OSCC. In addition, an association was found between the rs4730153 variant and lymph node metastasis in the OSCC cohort.

Introduction: To evaluate patterns of change in the urine protein-to-creatinine ratios (uPCRs) during labor at term between normal and women with pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH). Methods: This is an observational study in tertiary referral hospital, recruiting 269 women at term delivery in Taiwan from April 19, 2019 to April 18, 2021. uPCRs in four phases (latent, active, recovery and early postpartum) and related clinical data at delivery were collected. Multivariate analyses with a linear regression model were performed to analyze continuous variables after adjusting for clinical data between two groups. ⋯ The proportion of uPCRs ≥ 300 mg/g significantly increased from the active to the recovery phase and then declined from the recovery to the early postpartum phase in the normal group. Thus no differences in uPCRs cases change between any two phases in women with PIH, except the duration above stated. Conclusion: This is the first study to demonstrate that uPCRs data are not different between normal pregnant and PIH groups during the course of labor, but it did show different dynamic change patterns throughout the labor phases.

Gastric cancer is a highly malignant tumor. Gastric cancer stem cells (GCSCs) are the main causes of drug resistance, metastasis, recurrence, and poor prognosis. As a secondary metabolite of lichen, Atranorin has a variety of biological effects, such as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and wound healing; however, its killing effect on GCSCs has not been reported. ⋯ The results of high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and Dot blotting showed that Atranorin@SPION significantly inhibited the mRNA 5‑hydroxymethylcytidine modification of GCSCs. Meanwhile, the results of RNA immunoprecipitation-PCR also indicated that Atranorin@SPIONs significantly reduced the 5-hydroxymethylcytidine modification level of GPX4 and SLC7A11 mRNA 3' untranslated region in GCSCs, resulting in a decrease in their stability, shortening their half-lives and reducing translation activity. Therefore, this study revealed that Atranorin@SPIONs induced ferroptosis of GCSCs by weakening the expression of the Xc-/GPX4 axis and the 5-hydroxymethylcytidine modification of mRNAs in the pathway, thereby achieving their therapeutic effect on gastric cancer.

Objective: This study aimed to analyze the efficacy of autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation for high-risk neuroblastoma in China. Methods: The data of 90 high-risk neuroblastoma patients treated with the CCCG-NB 2015 regimen were reviewed. The baseline clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis were analyzed and compared. ⋯ There was no difference in the distribution of baseline clinical case characteristics between the single transplantation group and the tandem transplantation group (p>0.05), and there was no significant difference in EFS and OS between the two groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Based on this pretreatment programme, autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation is safe and tolerable and significantly improves the prognosis of children in the high-risk group. The value of tandem autologous stem cell transplantation is worthy of further discussion, which should consider various aspects such as the transplantation medication regimen and the patient's state.

Clinical efficacy of short-term prewarming in elderly and adult patients: A prospective observational study.
Background: Short-term prewarming effectively reduces intraoperative hypothermia in adult patients. However, few data exist regarding its efficacy in elderly patients. Elderly people have a reduced ability to regulate their body temperature, which affects the efficacy of prewarming. ⋯ Postoperative shivering was more frequent in elderly than in adult patients (33.3% vs. 8.0%, p = 0.037). A greater number of elderly patients in the post-anaesthesia care unit required active warming (33.3% vs. 8.0%, p = 0.037). Conclusions: The effects of short-term prewarming on the prevention of hypothermia and maintenance of perioperative normothermia are not the same in the elderly and adult patients.
