Aim: To investigate whether it is safe for patients with Omicron variant infection to undergo surgery during perioperative period. Methods: A total of 3,661 surgical patients were enrolled: 3,081 who were not infected with the Omicron variant and 580 who were infected with the Omicron variant. We conducted propensity score matching (PSM) with a ratio of 1:4 and a caliper value of 0.1 to match the infected and uninfected groups based on 13 variables. ⋯ However, there was no statistically significant difference in the incidence rate of blood transfusion, postoperative intensive care unit transfer, lung infection/pneumonia, pleural effusion, atelectasis, respiratory failure, sepsis, postoperative deep vein thrombosis, hypoalbuminemia, urinary tract infections, and medical expenses. Conclusion: Omicron infection does not significantly increase the risk of perioperative major complications. The Omicron infection may not be a sufficient risk factor to postpone elective surgery.

Background: BMS-1166, a PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor, inhibits the binding of PD-L1 to PD-1, restores T cell function, and enhances tumor immune response. However, mutations in the tumor suppressor or impaired cellular signaling pathways may also lead to cellular transformation. In this study, the SW480 and SW480R cell lines were used as the model to elucidate the treatment with BMS-1166, BEZ235, and their combination. ⋯ Conclusions: PD-1 binds to PD-L1 and activates the PI3K/mTOR and MAPK pathways, which might be the molecular mechanism of acquired resistance of CRC to BMS-1166. The combination of the two drugs inhibited the phosphorylation of PI3K, Akt, and Erk in the PI3K/mTOR and MAPK pathway, i.e., BEZ235 enhanced the BMS-1166 treatment effect by blocking the PI3K/mTOR pathway and interfering with the crosstalk of the MAPK pathway. Therefore, these findings provide a theoretical basis for BMS-1166 combined with BEZ235 in the trial treatment of colorectal cancer.

Objective: Our study aims to evaluate the value of 256-slice dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) in supporting prostatic artery embolization (PAE) under digital subtraction angiography (DSA) for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Methods: The study was conducted on 88 patients who underwent PAE to treat BPH from January 2022 to November 2023. Of these, 38 patients who had PAE without DECT were placed in group 1, while the other 50 patients with pre-interventional DECT were assigned to group 2. ⋯ There is no statistically significant difference in PA diameter on DECT compared to DSA with 95% confidence. Group 2 used DECT for 3D rendering of the PA before PAE had procedure time reduced by 25.8%, fluoroscopy time reduced by 23.2%, dose-area product (DAP) reduced by 25.6%, contrast medium volume reduced by 33.1% compared to group 1 not using DECT, statistically significant with 95% confidence. Conclusion: DECT is a valuable method for planning before PAE to treat BPH. 3D rendering DECT of PA provides anatomical information that minimizes procedure time, fluoroscopy time, dose-area product, and contrast medium volume.

In this study, we developed a microfluidic device that is able to monitor cell biology under continuous PM2.5 treatment. The effects of PM2.5 on human alveolar basal epithelial cells, A549 cells, and uncovered several significant findings were investigated. The results showed that PM2.5 exposure did not lead to a notable decrease in cell viability, indicating that PM2.5 did not cause cellular injury or death. ⋯ The disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential further supports the detrimental effects of PM2.5 on A549 cells. These findings highlight several adverse effects of PM2.5 on A549 cells, including enhanced invasion and migration capabilities, altered gene expression related to ROS pathways, increased ROS production and disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential. These findings contribute to our understanding of the potential mechanisms through which PM2.5 can impact cellular function and health.

Background: Adult-acquired flatfoot deformity (AAFD) is characterized by partial or complete flattening of the longitudinal medial arch, which develops after maturity. AAFD secondary to posterior tibialis tendon dysfunction (PTTD) is one of professional athletes' most common foot and ankle pathologies. Different modalities and procedures can be used to establish the diagnosis of AAFD and PTTD. ⋯ No significant correlation was found between PTT tear and CIA (p = 0.728; 95% CI -0.223, - 0.159; r - 0.033). Conclusion: This study showed a negative correlation between PTTD and AAFD via ultrasound and CIA in professional athletes with medial ankle and focal pain along the PTT. A better understanding of PTTD and AAFD imaging will lead to more effective management and prompt treatment.
