Purpose: Our aim was to evaluate the effect of prophylactic pilocarpine on acute salivary symptoms after radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer. Methods: We enrolled 88 patients (76 women and 12 men; mean age: 47 years; range: 20-74 years) with differentiated thyroid cancer who received RAI. Patients were divided into pilocarpine (51 patients) and control (37 patients) groups. ⋯ Acute salivary symptoms were reported by 4 (7.8%) and 9 (24.3%) patients in the pilocarpine and control groups, respectively. Acute salivary symptoms were less frequent in the pilocarpine than control group (p = 0.04), but did not differ by age, sex, or RAI dose (p = 0.3357, p = 0.428, and p = 0.2792). Conclusions: Pilocarpine reduced the likelihood of acute sialadenitis after RAI therapy in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer.

Objective: Gout is a dangerous metabolic condition related to monosodium urate (MSU). Our aim is to study the molecular mechanisms underlying gout and to identify potential clinical biomarkers by bioinformatics analysis and experimental validation. Methods: In this study, we retrieved the overlapping genes between GSE199950-Differential Expressed Genes (DEGs) dataset and key module in Weighted Gene Co-Expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) on GSE199950. ⋯ Finally, the results of in vitro experiments showed that after knocking down IL1A, the expressions of pro-inflammatory cytokines and Toll-like receptor signaling pathway-related proteins (TLR2, TLR4, MyD88) were all reduced. Conclusion: It is confirmed that IL1A is a promoting gene in gout with a good diagnostic value, and specifically it affects the inflammation in gout through Toll-like receptor pathway. Our research offers fresh perspectives on the pathophysiology of gout and valuable directions for future diagnosis and treatment.

Background: Cleavage factor Im25 (CFIm25) regulates cell function by affecting mRNA editing processes and plays diverse roles in various diseases. Studies have found that peripheral blood monocytes are valuable in diagnosing and prognosing coronary atherosclerosis. However, no studies have examined the predictive value of CFIm25 expression in peripheral blood monocytes for coronary atherosclerosis. ⋯ Univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression analyses showed that CFIm25 expression in peripheral blood monocytes was a protective factor for severe lesions, ≥ 50% stenosis, and three-vessel lesions. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve of CFIm25 expression for predicting lesions, severe lesions, ≥50% stenosis, and three-vessel lesions were 0.743, 0.735, 0.791, and 0.736, respectively. Conclusions: CFIm25 expression in peripheral blood monocytes correlates negatively with the degree of coronary atherosclerosis and helps predict the severity and number of coronary artery lesions.

Introduction: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fourth most prevalent cancer in China. Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is a common interventional therapy for HCC. In this study, we aimed to explore specific metabolites that can accurately predict prognosis after TACE in patients with HCC. ⋯ Conclusions: Limited studies had been conducted on the detection of metabolites in the plasma of HCC patients before and after TACE. PC 36:4|PC 18:2_18:2 is a potential marker for evaluation of the therapeutic effects of TACE. This finding may be beneficial for the treatment of patients with HCC after TACE.

Background: Complications of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) had been widely discussed. However, whether TKA influence risk of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in osteoarthritis patients remained uncertain. We intend to evaluate the risk of RA in osteoarthritis patients underwent TKA. ⋯ Subgroup analysis demonstrated a significant increase in the risk of RA following TKA in the female subgroup (HR=1.42; 95% CI, 1.24-1.63), the subgroup aged 18-64 years (HR=1.48; 95% CI, 1.11-1.97), and the subgroup aged greater than 65 years old (HR=1.38; 95% CI, 1.21-1.58) based on 5-year follow-up. Conclusion: Clinicians should be concerned about uncharted association between TKA and RA reported our current study. Additional prospective studies and in-depth mechanistic inquiries were warranted to determine the causation.
