MiR-508-3p promotes proliferation and inhibits apoptosis of middle ear cholesteatoma cells by targeting PTEN/PI3K/AKT pathway.
Cholesteatoma of the middle ear is a common disease in otolaryngology, which can lead to serious intracranial and extracranial complications. Recent studies showed that the dysregulation of microRNA may be involved in the formation of middle ear cholesteatoma. This study aimed to explore the regulatory effect of micro ribonucleic acid 508-3p (miR-508-3p) on proliferation and apoptosis of middle ear cholesteatoma cells and excavate its underlying regulatory mechanism. ⋯ Gain and loss of functions of miR-508-3p were performed to identify their roles in the biological behaviors of cholesteatoma cells, including proliferation and apoptosis. Rescue assays confirmed that PTEN could reverse the effect of miR-508-3p overexpression on cell proliferation. In a word, this study validated that the development of cholesteatoma may regulated by hsa_circ_0000007/miR-508-3p/ PTEN/ PI3K/Akt axis.

Differences in detected safety signals between benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepine hypnotics: pharmacovigilance study using a spontaneous reporting system.
Introduction: In recent years, there has been an increasing number of people who feel sleep-deprived owing to sudden changes in the social environment. Patients prescribed benzodiazepine-based hypnotics (BZ drugs) also develop movement disorder action and memory disorders as adverse events (AEs), and they have further problems such as dependency and tolerance because of long-term use. Therefore, the use of non-benzodiazepine-based hypnotics (Z-drugs) is recommended for patients with insomnia. ⋯ Conclusion: AEs related to falls and bone fractures are expected to be more strongly onset in BZ drugs than in Z-drugs, which are said to have less muscle relaxant action. However, there was no particularly significant difference in this parameter between the two drug classes. Understanding the difference between these AEs of Z-drugs and BZ drugs is important for the proper use of hypnotics.

The relationship between premorbid intelligence and symptoms of severe anorexia nervosa restricting type.
The purposes of this study were as follows: to compare premorbid IQ with present IQ in patients with more severe anorexia nervosa restricting type (AN-R) and to investigate the relationship between decreasing IQ and symptoms in patients with severe AN-R. Twenty-two participants were recruited (12 were AN-R patients; 10 were healthy controls). The average BMI in AN-R patients and healthy controls was 12.65 and 19.82, respectively. ⋯ Only in the AN-R group, a significant single main effect of time was evidenced for the FIQ and PIQ. In the AN-R group, a significantly high positive correlation was found between changes in the PIQ and the body dissatisfaction subscale of the EDI-2. These findings raise the possibility that in patients with severe AN-R, an excessive decrease in body weight induces decreased PIQ; as a result, they have worse dissatisfaction with their body shape.

Radiomics based on fluoro-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography predicts liver fibrosis in biopsy-proven MAFLD: a pilot study.
Rationale: Since non-invasive tests for prediction of liver fibrosis have a poor diagnostic performance for detecting low levels of fibrosis, it is important to explore the diagnostic capabilities of other non-invasive tests to diagnose low levels of fibrosis. We aimed to evaluate the performance of radiomics based on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) in predicting any liver fibrosis in individuals with biopsy-proven metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). Methods: A total of 22 adults with biopsy-confirmed MAFLD, who underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT, were enrolled in this study. ⋯ The coarseness of neighborhood grey-level difference matrix (NGLDM) and long-run emphasis (LRE) of grey-level run length matrix (GLRLM) were selected to predict fibrosis. The logistic regression model performed best with an AUROC of 0.817 [95% confidence intervals, 0.595-0.947] for prediction of liver fibrosis. Conclusion: These preliminary data suggest that 18F-FDG PET radiomics may have clinical utility in assessing early liver fibrosis in MAFLD.

Temporomandibular Disorders and Oral Features in Idiopathic Inflammatory Myopathies (IIMs) Patients: An Observational Study.
Aim: Inflammatory idiopathic myopathies (IIMs) are inflammatory processes affecting skeletal musculature and extramuscular organs. Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) involve jaw muscles and temporomandibular joint. The aim of this observational study was to investigate the prevalence of the main TMD symptoms and signs as well as oral implications in IIM patients. ⋯ Bruxism was present only in CG. Conclusion: The data collected from this observational study seem to support the existence of a relationship between the prevalence of TMD symptoms and signs as well as oral features in patients with myositis. A remarkable reduction of salivary flow and dysphagia were more frequent and severe in IIM patients, as well as muscle contracture and myofacial pain evoked by palpation, this result being highly significant.
