Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association between serum potassium variability and 60-day mortality and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients following the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study on MHD patients treated at the affiliated hospital of Qingdao University hemodialysis center who were infected with the novel coronavirus between December 1, 2022, and January 31, 2023. Baseline characteristics of patients were collected from electronic medical records. ⋯ Kaplan-Meier curves showed that a higher potassium variability coefficient was associated with higher all-cause mortality (P = 0.024). After adjusting for potential confounders, multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that the HR for 60-day mortality in the Q4 group compared to the Q1 group was 2.06 (95% CI = 1.03-4.09, P = 0.040), and binary Logistic regression analysis showed that the OR for 60-day CVD in the Q4 group compared to the Q1 group was 4.09 (95% CI = 1.52-10.97, P = 0.005). Conclusion: Increased serum potassium variability in MHD patients after COVID-19 infection significantly increased the likelihood of 60-day mortality and CVD.

Background: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is mostly characterized by gastrointestinal tract involvement, however can also be accompanied with cardiac manifestations. QRS prolongation and the presence of QRS fragmentation (fQRS) have been previously evaluated in many chronic inflammatory diseases, as an independent predictor of cardiac events. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the QRS duration and fQRS in patients with IBD. ⋯ Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that QRS prolongation and the presence of fQRS (+) were more common in IBD patients, and associated with longer disease duration. These findings may indicate subclinical cardiac involvement in IBD. Therefore, IBD patients, especially those with long-standing disease, should be followed more closely in terms of cardiac manifestations.

Background: Both observational studies and clinical trials have demonstrated a link between the gut microbiota and the geriatric syndrome. Nevertheless, the exact nature of this relationship, particularly concerning causality, remains elusive. Mendelian randomization (MR) is a method of inference based on genetic variation to assess the causal relationship between an exposure and an outcome. ⋯ Similarly, insomnia demonstrated nine positive and two negative causal connections, while depression presented nine positive and two negative causal relationships. Conclusions: Using the TSMR method and data from the public GWAS database and, we observed associations between specific microbiota groups and geriatric syndromes. These findings suggest a potential role of gut microbiota in the development of geriatric syndromes, providing valuable insights for further research into the causal relationship between gut microbiota and these syndromes.

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the predictive accuracy of 30-day mortality with delta neutrophil index (DNI) in adult cardiac surgical patients. Methods: This study enrolled patients who underwent cardiac surgery under general anesthesia between March 2016 and May 2022 at a tertiary hospital in the Republic of Korea. DNI was measured preoperatively, on postoperative arrival to the surgical intensive care unit (ICU), and 12, 24, 48, and 72 h postoperatively. ⋯ The DNI showed satisfactory predictive accuracy at 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h postoperatively, with AUROC of 0.729, 0.711, and 0.755, respectively. The optimal cutoff points of DNI at each time point were 3.2, 3.8, and 2.3, respectively. Conclusions: Postoperative DNI is a good predictor of 30-day mortality after cardiac surgery and has the benefit of no additional financial costs or time.

Comparison of Screws with Different Diameters in Subperiosteal Implant Application with Finite Element Analysis.
Purpose: This study aimed to assess subperiosteal implants concerning bone stress and screw displacement, utilizing finite element analysis to determine the optimal screw diameter for enhanced bone support. Methods: Computed tomography data were translated into STL format, generating two skull models. Subperiosteal implants were constructed on these models and placed accordingly. ⋯ However, the 1.5 mm screw exhibited less implant movement. Conclusion: The finite element analysis suggests the 2 mm screw diameter as more advantageous over the 1.5 mm variant for subperiosteal implants. Nevertheless, this investigation marks the initial stages in exploring this treatment option's potential.
