Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors have become the best choice of second-line oral antidiabetic drugs for patients with heart or chronic kidney disease. However, it is not clear how safe this treatment is for elderly patients, especially Asians, who are known to be more insulin deficient than Caucasian individuals with a similar insulin resistance. ⋯ The patient was discharged with a prescription of a mixed-type insulin injection instead of oral antidiabetic medications for diabetes control. Our case demonstrates that if SGLT-2 inhibitors are administered to elderly Asian patients, their benefits and adverse effects should be carefully monitored.

We examined the prevalence of probable common mental disorders (CMDs) in commercial low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) lung cancer screening consumers relative to the general population and to determine the correlates of probable CMDs among screening participants. ⋯ Purely observational studies (those in which the assignment of the medical intervention is not at the discretion of the investigator) do not require registration.

Gingival overgrowth can occur as a result of poor oral hygiene or a side effect of taking certain medications, such as cyclosporine A (CsA). It has been shown that this immunosuppressant drug induces epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in the gingival epithelium but the associated molecular mechanism remains to be elucidated. ⋯ Our results showed that insufficient miR-200a in HGFs caused by CsA administration may lead to gingival enlargement mediated by the upregulation of ZEB2. This finding supported that CsA-induced EMT contributed to the adverse effect of using CsA and miR-200a may serve as an upstream target to prevent the overgrowth of the gingiva.

To evaluate the accuracy and effectiveness of noncycloplegic and cycloplegic autorefraction using two types of autorefractors (ARs) compared with retinoscopy in children and adolescents. ⋯ Both autorefractors showed great agreement with retinoscopy. Results obtained using NVision-K 5001 without cycloplegia were most similar to those by retinoscopy, especially for oblique astigmatism and hyperopia detection in younger children. For large vision screening in elementary school, Shin-Nippon NVision-K 5001 might be a more suitable autorefractor.

Impaired growth of the corpus callosum (CC) and cerebellar vermis (CV) is associated with poorer neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants. However, references on the postnatal growth rate of the CC and CV by sonography are limited. The aim of this study is to assess the normal linear growth of CC and CV using a serial cranial ultrasound. ⋯ We proposed reference values of the normal linear growth rate of the CC and CV lengths in very-low-birth-weight preterm infants using the serial cranial ultrasound.
