Sapoviruses (SaVs) become important pathogens causing both sporadic and outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) after rotavirus vaccination era worldwide. SaVs were included in AGE screening items when norovirus and rotavirus were negative in Taiwan CDC since 2008. However, no complete SaV genome sequence of any genotype detected in Taiwan was determined. This study aimed to investigate SaVs infection and complete genome sequences detected in Taiwan. ⋯ Our result confirmed that SaV is one of the pathogens detected from Taiwanese AGE patients. Multiple SaV genotype strains would associate with AGE as similar to those detected in different countries/areas. The whole genome of SaV strains detected including rarely reported GII.8 was firstly determined.

To investigate nerve excitability changes in patients with fibromyalgia and the correlation with clinical severity. ⋯ The present study revealed that paranodal sensory K+ conductance was altered in patients with fibromyalgia. The altered conductance indicated dysfunction of paranodal fast K+ channels, which is known to be associated with the generation of pain.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly recurrent tumor. Antiviral therapy with nucleos(t)ide analogues (NUCs) may reduce the risk of recurrence in hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related HCC. The risk factors associated with recurrence in HCC patients after surgical resection and with NUCs treatment should be delineated. ⋯ For HBV-HCC patients on NUCs treatment, tumor factors are associated with early recurrence, while HBsAg level and thrombocytopenia determines late recurrence. For patient with a high baseline HBsAg level, warning of higher risk of recurrence is required even under NUCs treatment.

Isolated sphenoid sinus disease (ISSD) is a rare clinical entity with potentially serious complications. The etiological distribution of ISSD varies among different areas and ethnicities. We aimed to investigate the clinical features of patients with endoscopic treated ISSD. ⋯ ISSD represents a variety of etiologies, mostly comprising fungal ball in our area, while there is still a considerable proportion of ISSDs attributed to neoplasm and CSF leak. Untreated ISSD can result in serious complications. We recommend early surgical intervention for all patients with ISSD.

Recent progress in cancer immunology provides more insight in immune evasion of cancer cells. Cancer cells may achieve immune evasion through several ways including ineffective antigen presentation, T cell checkpoint utilization, immunosuppressive cytokines secretion and immunosuppressive cells recruitment. However, few literatures mentioned about the change of peripheral blood immune cells in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. To answer this question, we initiated a pilot study through detailed flow cytometry. ⋯ CD69-CD25- Naïve CD4αβT cell percentage and dendritic cell percentage in peripheral blood are highly correlated with the advanced HCC status. The change may result from immune evasion initiated by hepatocellular carcinoma cells and further investigation is warranted. Validation study is ongoing and this mechanism may be utilized to treat advanced HCC patient in the future.
