Of the types of pulmonary hypertension, chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) may be cured through pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA). In this study, we investigated patient experiences with PEA for CTEPH treatment in Taiwan. ⋯ When pre-operative and post-operative statuses were compared, we found a significant improvement in NYHA FC and 6MWT distance. Our study also found a lower in-hospital mortality rate compared to other published studies, except compared to the newer data provided by the University of California, San Diego group.

Healthcare personnel (HCP) at the front line of care are exposed to occupational hazards that place them at risk for infection, which then endanger patient safety and compromise the capability of the healthcare workforce. As of March 8, 2021 more than 420,170 HCP in US had been infected with SARS CoV-2 with 1388 deaths. In two Taiwan hospitals COVID-19 outbreaks involved HCP and resulted in shutdown of service. This report describes our prospective health surveillance of the HCP and COVID-19 containment measures in a teaching hospital in Taiwan during Jan. 1 through June 30, 2020. ⋯ We attribute our success in preventing COVID-19 infections among HCP to rapid, proactive, decisive, integrated national and institutional response in the early stages of the epidemic.

Adult patients of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with very high-risk (VHR) characteristics have an inferior outcome, and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is usually performed. In contrast, VHR pediatric patients can be treated effectively with minimal residual disease (MRD)-guided pediatric protocols and HSCT are not always needed. ⋯ Young adult VHR patients can be effectively treated with the TPOG-ALL-2002 protocol, and those who achieved MRD negativity before the end of consolidation have a good outcome without allogeneic HSCT.

Salmonella Panama was considered an invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella (iNTS) serovar. Comprehensive clinical, microbiological, and genomic studies on S. Panama are scarce. We aimed to characterize the clinical and microbiological characteristics of S. Panama infection. Virulence mechanism of S. Panama and other iNTS serovars were also examined. ⋯ This study confirmed that S. Panama is a clinically invasive serovar. Different iNTS serovars express common virulence phenotypes, but they may acquire invasiveness through distinct expression or combinations of virulence genes.

Decorin is a small leucine-rich proteoglycan rich in extracellular matrix with potential antitumor activity. However, the role of decorin in hematological malignancies remains unclear, especially in the case of multiple myeloma (MM), a bone marrow (BM) stroma-dependent plasma cell neoplasm. ⋯ Our findings suggest that decorin may exert protective effects in this subset of MM patients.
