Short-term oral anticoagulation (OAC) is recommended for patients after surgical bioprosthetic aortic valve replacement (bAVR); however, the potential benefits remain controversial. This study evaluated the effects of short-term OAC following bAVR. ⋯ Our study demonstrated that short-term OAC use after bAVR was associated with lower all-cause mortality. The prevalence of 1-year embolism/ischemic stroke/ICH were comparable despite of OAC use.

The signaling mechanisms for Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide (PgLPS)-induced inflammation in human dental pulp cells are not fully clarified. This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the involvement of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt) pathway in PgLPS-induced pulpal inflammation. ⋯ P. gingivalis contributes to pulpal inflammation in HDPCs by dysregulating PI3K/Akt signaling pathway to stimulate IL-6 and IL-8 mRNA/protein expression and secretion. These results are useful for understanding the pulpal inflammation and possible biomarkers of inflamed pulp diagnosis and treatment.

he first imported case of monkeypox in Taiwan was diagnosed in an Asian man with HIV-1 infection and asymptomatic COVID-19, returning from Germany. Atypical presentations included asynchronous skin lesions, anogenital lesions and prominent inguinal lymphadenopathy. Whole genomic sequence alignment indicate that the Taiwan strain clustered together with human monkeypox virus West African clade B.1, currently circulating in Europe. Prompt diagnosis and infection control measures are crucial to mitigate the spread of monkeypox.

This study compared the incidence of Meniere's disease (MD) in the elderly aged >65 years between the first (2001-2010) and second (2011-2020) decades to investigate the evolution of geriatric MD. ⋯ Evolution of geriatric MD during the past two decades reveals an increased incidence of the elderly MD patients, likely due to increased life expectancy coupled with altered life style.

Long-chain ceramides are associated with the mechanisms and clinical outcomes of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). This study aimed to investigate the plasma ceramides and sphingosine-1-phosphate in AIS patients undergoing endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) and their associations with outcomes. ⋯ Plasma ceramides were elevated early in AIS patients with acute large artery occlusion. Furthermore, Cer (d18:1/16:0) and Cer (d18:1/18:0) could be early prognostic indicators for AIS patients undergoing EVT.
