To study the clinical and immunological data of patients affected by a soybean asthma outbreak in Tarragona, Spain. ⋯ The outbreak affected atopic patients exposed to soybean dust. The severity of the crisis was related with the previous severity of asthma. Besides the well known 5-6 kD allergenic soybean protein, the 15.5-17 kD protein seems also to be implicated in the sensitization of most of these patients.

Hip fractures are a major source of mortality and morbidity among the elderly. The aim of the present study is to try to identify predictors of death and of non-deambulation during the period of acute treatment. ⋯ Mortality in the immediate postoperative period is associated with sex, dementia and previous personal independence. The hospital stay is extended and functional recovery at discharge is low, therefore, new programs for these patients should be considered.

The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) shows marked geographical variations. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the incidence of IBD in four Spanish areas: Sabadell (Northeast), Vigo (Northwest), Mallorca island and Motril (South). ⋯ The incidence of IBD did not show differences among the Spanish areas, and rates are between 2 and 6 times higher than those previously reported. The incidence of UC is significantly lower than that observed in the North of Europe, while for CD the incidence is between that of Northern and Southern Europe.
