Background The western recommendations for the use of organs from liver donors with tuberculosis (TB) come from an environment where the burden of disease is low and cadaveric organ donation rates are high-in complete contrast to the Indian scenario, where these recommendations may be too restrictive. Methods A questionnaire relating to current practice on the use of organs from liver donors with TB was sent to all liver transplant centres in India. Results Responses were obtained from 94% of centres. ⋯ Half the respondents accepted living donors after completion of ATT, and did not treat recipients postoperatively. The remainder accepted them after 8 weeks of treatment and advised INH prophylaxis or ATT for recipients. Conclusions That this practice has not impacted recipient outcomes suggests that the guidelines for management of liver donors and recipients may need to be altered for populations endemic for TB.

Background The prevalence of tobacco use is high in rural India, but limited information on tobacco use among the tribal population is available. We assessed the prevalence of tobacco use and type of tobacco use in the Gond tribal population. Methods We did a cross-sectional survey among the Gond tribal population residing in the Kundam block of Jabalpur district in Madhya Pradesh state in India. ⋯ Conclusion The study highlights a high tobacco use in the Gond tribe population. The high prevalence of tobacco use in younger ages is a matter of serious concern. The study establishes a need for information, education and communication and behavioural change communication activities; health camps focusing on the harmful effects of tobacco use and tobacco control campaign among tribal communities, tribal schools and ashrams.

Prevalence of psychological morbidity and its correlates among school-going adolescents of urban Puducherry, India.
Background Experiencing poor mental health during adolescence predisposes an individual to psychiatric morbid conditions in adulthood. We estimated the prevalence of psychological morbidity and its associated factors, among school-going adolescents in higher secondary schools of urban Puducherry. Methods We did this cross-sectional study among adolescents studying in classes 11 and 12 from selected schools of urban Puducherry, including one government and three private schools. ⋯ Of note, adolescents with psychological stress had 2.5 times higher chances of having psychological morbidity. Conclusions We estimated that 1 in 4 school-going adolescents in urban Puducherry suffered psychological morbidity. Reducing the academic burden and advocating health promotion through a life skills approach may improve mental wellness in Indian adolescents.

Background Blood ordering is commonly done for patients undergoing major elective surgery. Excessive order of the blood for elective surgery leads to wastage of resources, time and workforce. Auditing preoperative blood ordering decreases the cost of medical care by avoiding unnecessary cross-match without compromising patient safety. ⋯ Conclusion Cross-matching is overused for elective surgical procedures. Only 16 of the 71 procedures had an ideal C/T ratio. Group and screen policy can be adopted for most of the commonly performed procedures, and cross-matching of blood may not be needed.

Lipodystrophy syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by selective deficiency of adipose tissue and severe insulin resistance resulting in metabolic complications. Its presentation as polycystic ovary disease (PCOD) is even rarer. We present a 23-year-old woman who came with complaints of oligomenorrhoea and hirsutism. ⋯ We suggest that in lean patients with PCOD, lipodystrophy becomes a differential diagnosis, so attention should be paid to body fat distribution in them. Despite normal body mass index (BMI), these patients tend to develop metabolic complications as in our patient (BMI 21.5). This diagnosis has long-term implications in view of its association with metabolic complications.
