Postoperative paralytic ileus refers to the disruption of the normal coordinated propulsive motor activity of the gastrointestinal system following surgery. Surgery causes inflammation in the muscle walls of organs with an intestinal lumen that, in turn, leads to a decrease in intestinal motility. ⋯ Gastrografin and combined use of gastrografin and neostigmine are effective and viable methods for postoperative ileus cases. Gastrografin can safely be used in patients with anastomoses.

Flexible bronchoscopy (FB) is a safe and commonly performed procedure in pulmonary medicine. Bronchoscopy literature mainly focusing on technical aspects. However, data on patients satisfaction and bronchoscopy is rare. ⋯ Patient satisfaction with bronchoscopy was lower in our study compared to other studies, despite high ratings of doctors' and nurses' skills. Elderly patients and patients with outpatient bronchoscopies were less likely to return and should therefore be approached with extra care. Physicians can improve FB-related patient experiences by decreasing discomfort during bronchoscope insertion and by improving topical anesthesia.

Nephronophthisis (NPHP) is a common pediatric cystic kidney disease, accounting for approximately 10% of end-stage renal failure cases in children. NPHP is primarily diagnosed through the identification of indel mutations and copy number variants (CNVs), and patients carrying NPHP1 mutations usually progress to renal failure at a mean age of 13 years old. However, the association between CNVs containing NPHP1 variations and the progression of NPHP-induced disease remains unclear. ⋯ The proband was in stage 4 of CKD while her brother had progressed to renal failure, probably due to more extensive heterozygous deletion of a 67.115 kbp fragment, which included LIMS3-LOC440895, LOC440895, GPAA1P1, ZBTB45P1, and LINC0112 genes. This report demonstrates that larger CNV deletions, including homozygous NPHP1, MALL, and MTLN mutations and heterozygous deletions, presumably accelerate disease progression. Therefore, early genetic diagnosis plays a crucial role in the intervention and prognosis of these patients.

Thyroid carcinomas are the most common malignant endocrine tumors, and various immunohistochemical markers are tested in routine practice to reduce diagnostic differences, as well as to elucidate carcinogenesis and detect malignancy. Disruption of basement membranes and the extracellular matrix is an important step in tumor carcinogenesis and progression. The claudin and matrix metalloproteinase families are also thought to be effective in this process. ⋯ These results indicate that claudin-1 and MMP-7 are important in the diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and carcinogenesis of follicular adenoma, follicular carcinoma, medullary carcinoma, papillary carcinoma, and single dominant nodules.

Bone tissue engineering offers several advantages for repairing skeletal defects. In this study, we designed and fabricated a scaffold for bone tissue engineering in patients with horizontal alveolar defect. ⋯ The newly designed scaffold is a suitable treatment modality for bone tissue engineering.
